Chapter One

Thomas' POV

I wake up to the annoying sound of my computer making a loud beeping noise and squint as my eyes adjust to the brightness. I look outside my window and notice the early morning mist floating around the city. The sky is a pretty mix of oranges and yellows and pinks with only a tiny amount of sun visible on the horizon. I don't normally have the pleasure of seeing sunrises and I would stare at the breathtaking sky all morning if my computer isn't reminding me that it needs attention.

I slowly get up from my cosy nest of a bed and wander over to my desk. My computer is flashing red with the word ALERT! staring back at me. I click a few buttons and a view of the super-villain Venom appears on my screen. I watch my screen curiously, trying to figure out what he might be up to. He walks to the back of an apartment building and melts the lock off the back so he can get inside. I quickly put my light blue suit and mask on with a yellow flash of lightning printed on my chest, and without further hesitation, I quickly find Venom's location and speedily run outside of my house and to the apartment in less than two minutes.

I use my phone to track him and rush inside of the apartment building, trying to guide myself towards him. I go up one flight of stairs and find him on the landing in his signature black suit and mask with a green lizard printed in the middle of his chest. There's fire blazing from his hand at the ready to melt the door handle. I feel the heat from where I am and make sure to stay back. I hold my hand out in front of me and soft cold snow flies towards his hand, putting out the fire.

He looks over at me and I can only imagine that his expression shows great annoyance under his mask. He then holds both of his hands out and blasts fire on the ground in front of me, blocking me from getting to him. I immediately blast ice at the fire from my hands and it freezes it. I kick it out of the way and jump towards Venom, knocking him over and onto the ground.

He uses his telekinesis to get me off of him and my back is then shoved against a wall. I struggle but know that I can't escape his power. He steps closer to me and whispers four words.

"This isn't over yet."

He loosens his power on me and I slide to the floor before I see him quickly smash a window and then fly out of it. I sigh and stand up and look at the ice that has started to melt on the floor. The people that live here aren't going to be happy about that. They aren't going to be happy about the melted lock on the back door and now broken window either.

Realising that there's not much I can do and that I should get back home, I speed my way out of the apartment and to my house. Once I'm home, I take off my superhero suit and get ready for school. Knowing that I'm probably going to be really tired today after getting up early and fighting Venom, I go downstairs to make myself a coffee.

I walk through the entrance to my school and make my way to my locker. I put in my combination and open it up to grab the books I'll need for my first class. I then feel a tap on my shoulder and look round to face my best friend Teresa. Her hair is flowing past her shoulders in long dark waves, her blue eyes sparkling at me and her friendly smile showing me that she's happy to see me.

"Hey you!" She says, her voice happy and excited.

I look at her, my eyebrows furrowed together and a confused expression on my face. "You seem excited?" I tell her, but asking her as more of a question rather than stating it to her.

"That's because I am!" Her eyes glisten and her lips curl into a bigger smile. "There's a new boy, the same age as us, and I've heard that he's pretty cute!"

I roll my eyes and scoff at her. "Trust you to get all worked up about a cute boy."

She chuckles a bit and then tells me, "I'm excited for you, stupid! You've been going on about how single you are for months! This is your chance to make a good impression on that boy!" She then squeals and jumps up and down.

"Seriously?" I say, almost annoyed at her, but I can't help my lips twitch at the sight of her so excited. "I don't even know this boy you keep going on about, Tess. What if I don't like him when— if I ever meet him?"

"Yeah, yeah. Blah, blah, blah. He's in our English class and you're going to sit next to him because I am forcing you to."

I stare at her, my eyes wide and questioning her if she's actually being truthful. She laughs at my expression and pats me on the shoulder, trying comfort me.

"It's ok, Tom. Just be yourself!"

"But... won't you be lonely?" I ask her, not just as a way of persuading her to drop this, but also because I don't want her to be alone.

"I'm pretty sure Brenda is in our class and I'd like to get to know her." She says, as a small pink blush forms over her cheeks.

"Does somebody like Brenda?" I tease, dragging out the 'a'. The colour of her cheeks deepen and she pretends to hit me on my shoulder.

"She just seems like she would be a cool friend, that's all!" She tells me, but can't stop the smile forming on her lips and her eyes from sparkling.

"It's ok, Tess. Just be yourself." I mock her from earlier, laughing slightly.

"Hey!" She pouts, pretending to be offended. She then laughs along with me as we walk along the corridor to our English class.

When Teresa and I enter our English class, we immediately notice that there is no sign of a new boy in the room. We decide to sit next to each other as her plan of getting me and the new boy together has obviously failed before it has even started. I look over at Teresa next to me, and seeing as we have been best friends for years, I know that the same questions are playing on her mind as they are on mine. Where is the new boy at? Is he really in this English class? Or is he late to his first lesson on his first day? I then realise that maybe the new boy had gotten lost on his way to class, or maybe he was being shown around the school.

Our teacher then sets us some work and I open up my exercise book. Just as I am about to start answering the questions, Teresa whispers something to me. "Where's the new boy at?"

I look over at her and notice that her blue eyes reflect slight worry in them. "He's probably being shown around school. It is his first day, right?" I say softly, trying to comfort her.

Teresa nods her head and shows me a small smile before she gets on with her work. The English lesson goes by slowly, the hands on the clock on one of the walls looking like it's barely moving. After what feels like hours of sitting and answering boring questions, the lesson is finally over.

The class quickly gathers their books and everything in silence, due to the teacher being incredibly strict, and once Teresa and I have left the classroom, we head over to our lockers to switch our books.

After grabbing a science book, I turn to Teresa and start feeling a little guilty. "I'm sorry that you couldn't sit with Brenda." I tell her honestly.

She looks at me and gives me a small smile, "It's ok, Tom. I'm sure I'll get to spend plenty of time with her once you meet the new kid." Her smile turns into a smirk by the time she's finished speaking.

I scoff at her and roll my eyes. "What if I don't even like him?"

"Well you better like him otherwise I'll start asking guys out on dates for you." She says sternly but starts giggling at the end.

I laugh at her and give her a gentle nudge with my elbow as we walk along the corridor. She gives me a shove and then it starts into a shoving contest and we have to keep apologising when we knock into people, our contagious laughter luckily making them forgive us right away.
