The next day, Camilla and Bruce agreed to have lunch together. So Camilla decided meeting him at the hospital would be a lot less stressful than him coming to pick her up at home. So she Ubered there, and just as she was leaving the parking lot towards the hospital entrance, she saw something she was certain couldn't be.
The same bike. Same type. Same color, and the exact same logo. What? There had to be some sort of explanation. How could he have known he was here? She only told X she was coming. Unless...
No. Maybe she was mistaken. Maybe he was there for other reasons. Not everything was about her after all. But among coincidences, that had to be the strangest ever. Martin's bike in her father's hospital parking lot? It's probably nothing. She consoled herself.
However, the thought didn't leave her brain. And what did Liam mean when he talked about her Sir name? She couldn't quite remember his exact words, but she knew it was about her father doing something... Was all that somehow related?
Camilla had confidence in her father. All she had to do was ask, and he'd tell her. If only it were that easy. She walked into the building and it was busy as ever. She took an elevator to the top floor where his office was. She didn't find the need to walk; so she just opened the door and what she saw left her puzzled.
Macy was on her father's side of the desk, but that wasn't it. The distance between them? Now that was questionable.
"What's going on?" A good answer better be coming up or so help me heavens I will tear somebody's daughter apart!
"She was just helping me get my contact lenses out." His story checked out. His eyes kept blinking as if he was trying to see in light after hours of darkness.
"Okay," she felt a bit silly. "Still up for lunch?" She walked in.
"Excuse me," Macy left in a rush, but Camilla followed swiftly.
"Macy, wait!" She stopped. "I'm sorry... For... Earlier..."
"It's okay," she was uneasy.
"I know you're just saying that, but..."
"Cam, I really have to go." Now, this was just desperation.
"Why don't you have lunch with us?" Was she not hearing a word she said?
"My emergency alarm is beeping; I'm needed somewhere now!" She explained.
"Oh," and the silly feeling was back. "Carry on then." Macy rushed to the elevator as she watched. Soon, Bruce walked out with his blazer hanging by his finger behind his back.
"Let's go,"
As Bruce was driving, Camilla spotted a taco truck and she insisted they stopped and get some. She took hers and went to the car, leaning on its side as she waited for her dad to get his as well, and pay up.
Suddenly, she remembered the phone call her dad had the previous night. She didn't know why, but she felt the urge to know who was on the other side of that phonecall. No matter what she wanted to believe, that was no normal phonecall. And eventually, her curiosity got the better of her. Through the left front window, she could see his phone in the holder. She got in, took it and switched it on.
Password, damn it! She thought for a while. It couldn't possibly be that hard. I mean, come on... It's her dad! Could it be my birthday? It's gotta be my birthday. She keyed it in. Bingo! I love you too dad. She went to the call logs, and man does he make a lot of phone calls. She had been scrolling for so long just to get to that morning. Finally, she reached the previous day and the hour was now appearing from the bottom of the screen.
Just before she could lay her eyes on it, something else caught her attention. The motorcycle she saw earlier just rode by and even though the rider was wearing a helmet, she tried to make out who he was. Unfortunately, it went beyond her sight before she could. She was about to get back to her mission but her dad came into the car, and she had to press home in order to keep him from growing suspicious. As he faced away buckling up, she slipped the phone right back into it's holder.
They then drove to some Italian restaurant. Each of them had risotto, but Camilla barely ate. Partly because she didn't like it, but mainly because of the taco she just had. The two barely talked. Bruce was constantly on the phone and Camilla honestly hated this. He dropped her home and she got out of the car without a word. What bothered her even more was that he didn't mind. He barely noticed that she was not okay. Damn his work. She cursed.
The rest of the day was boring, especially since she didn't have her phone. She wished her friends were around, but most of them lived far and were only around during school periods; just like her. And those who lived there had travelled, some went camping... Which she bailed. How much she regretted that. She would have avoided so much if she had just gone. But she always believed that she wasn't an outdoor person. Her interaction with X would say otherwise though.
X. She thought about him for a little while. Was she crazy to think that they could be a thing? He did prove himself to her though. But maybe he had another motivation. The thoughts ran through her mind until she fell asleep. Her father found her, sleeping on her covers. He pulled the covers from beneath her, covered her gently, then kissed her goodnight; just like he used to when she was a little girl.
"Dad?" She called out in a hoarse, sleepy voice just as he was about to turn the lights out.
"Yes, princess?" He looked back at her.
"I need your credit card for a new phone." She wasn't even opening her eyes.
"I thought you were gonna say I love you, but sure. I'll leave it on the dressing table before I leave for work tomorrow." He assured her before turning to leave.
"And dad?" He turned around again, certain that this time, it was the 'I love you' line coming up.
"Yes, baby girl?" He was already ready to say 'I love you' back.
"Please don't forget to leave the credit card?" He was a bit disappointed.
"I'll put it there right now." He sighed.
"Okay," she said sweetly. He turned the lights out, then proceeded to shut the door.
"I love you daddy." She finally said.
"I love you sweetheart." At the sound of that, her eyes abruptly opened. No trace of the heavy sleep that was carrying her away just a second ago. It only took a single word; that one word, to ruin her night.
