"More Human Than Human" By White Zombie

“Your father?” I echo dubiously. “What does that make you? If he’s able to do this shit to me what will you do? Are you going to hurt me?”

Wyatt grabs my face trying to calm me down from the impending hysterics. “No one is going to hurt you okay? I would never allow that to happen.”

“But—“

“Lila and Gideon are Cambions. Cambion is a half demon. Tallulah is a necromancer with the ability to foretell the future.” Orin speaks up, casually. Like he’s talking about the weather and not the high population of supernatural creatures in the house right now.

“And you?” I ask hesitantly.

He smiles widely before two sharp teeth come down from his gums and over his canines. “I’m a vampire.”

My breathing picks up and I turn my wide eyes to Wyatt. “And what about you? What are you?”

Wyatt’s brown eyes search my face for a minute before he looks down. When he eventually speaks his voice is low and anxious. “I’m a nephilim.”

I frown at him, “That sounds like a venereal disease.”

His head shoots up and Gideon starts laughing obnoxiously loud behind me. I look up at Tallulah to see her covering her hand with her mouth, trying to hold back a laugh while Lila is laughing into Orin’s shoulder. Orin is smirking at me but that’s about the extent of his reaction.

“What?” I ask stupidly.

“Nephilim.” Gideon says, still chuckling. “Is a person with the bloodline of an angel.”

Oh, now I can see why everyone was laughing. To be fair though I don’t know shit about any of this stuff. Mom never allowed that kind of shit in the house and any basics I knew from grandma was exactly that, basics. Jesus died for our sins and god is going to judge you so you better be good, all that stuff. Nephilims and Cambions were not on that information level.

“Well…shit.” I breathe. “What a twist.”

Gideon chuckles again behind me before setting a hand on my shoulder, “I like her. Can we keep her?”

Tallulah rolls her eyes, “One things at a time alright? Maggie, I know this is probably a lot to take in but we need to try to find whatever it is he’s seeking. As soon as we do then maybe we can come up with a plan to keep him away from you.”

“What does that involve?” Wyatt asks. I give him a glance at see anxiety written all over his face.

“I’ll just do a scan over her life force and see if they’re anything. If there isn’t then we can work our way back from there.” She replies with a shrug.

Again, she’s so casual about it all. It’s more than a little bizarre to be talking about this stuff. But I guess this is what you get when you start hanging around demon and angel offspring, a vampire, and a necromancer, whatever the hell that is. Figuring I should probably give this a shot, even if it is a bit hard to believe I sigh and get up from the step I’ve been sitting on.

“Where do you want to do this then?”

Tallulah lifts her eyebrows in surprise before she smiles pleasantly at me, “Do you have a good place to lay down. Maybe a comfortable rug? I’ll need room to move around you.”
