"Collapsing" By Demon Hunter
Five+
Everything big starts off small. That’s the best way I can describe the arrival. It doesn’t arrive with smoke or a display of fire and brimstone; it’s subtler than that. It’s the drop of temperature that I notice first and the way the room, despite the night creeping through the windows, seems to darken just a bit more. Slowly sitting up I can feel something standing behind me. I don’t turn towards it hoping that maybe it’ll go away if I don’t make eye contact.
I watch with growing panic as the temperature drops low enough that my breath comes out in billowy puffs of white from my mouth. Footsteps, heavy like anvils lands against the floor of my bedroom growing ever closer to me and making me shake in fear. Suddenly the footsteps stop by what I’m guessing to be by the foot of my bed from the sound of it, meaning its about three feet behind me.
It’s not a distance I’m comfortable with by a long shot.
A shiver runs up my spine and the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end as I sense it coming nearer but don’t hear it. My breathing becomes quicker and I shift my eyes to the right waiting for something, anything to happen. Cool and damp fingers caress my cheek and I close my eyes while letting out a whimper in undeniable fear.
“So soft.” A deep voice murmurs as the fingers begin moving down to my neck. “So warm.”
A small cry leaves my mouth as the fingers begin to dig into my flesh. I can feel the razor sharp nails raise red marks on my skin as the light caresses begin turning harsher. Another hand comes around to move some of my hair behind my ear as a cheek lies against my hair and lips come to rest at my ear.
“But not for long.”
Suddenly the hand lazily caressing my neck wraps around it and I am lifted about two feet above the ground. My feet dangle in the air but I have the presence of mind to look down at the thing about to kill me. Shock reverberates through me as a man stands before me. Normal to the untrained eyes perhaps but I know better. No one has eyes like that.
Pitch black eyes with rings of red around where an iris would be. His snow-white skin is matched with black unruly hair and plump lips pulled back to show two rows of razor sharp teeth. Clawing at his hands I try to get them off my neck but all it does it make him squeeze harder so I stop fighting. When I’m wheezing for air he tosses me across the room making me slam into one of the walls before landing in a heap on the floor coughing.
His hands claw into my hair and wrench my head back so I’m forced to look up at him as he smirks down at me, “There is nothing I can’t do to you until you give me what I want. I can hurt you in more ways than you can imagine and I will enjoy every second of it. Remember next time you think you can get rid of me with your human books. Understand?”
“No.” I cry, tears escaping my eyes as my scalp burns in pain, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t have anything you want. Please, this is a mistake. This is a mistake.”
The man chuckles dangerously before throwing my head back and releasing my hair. “You may not know what I want, Magdalena but I’ll get it all the same and I will never leave you alone until I do.”
As he speaks I scramble to my feet and head for the bedroom door. He doesn’t stop me but I can hear his cold hard laugh follow my footsteps as I take the stairs two by two. Swinging open the door I ignore the biting cold and the fact I’m just in a flimsy dress with no shoes on. Moving my body as fast I can I run down the sidewalks, away from the house, away from my room and away from that man.
