Clara

🌸

I jogged up the concrete steps to the high school, dreading the start of the day. I was eighteen, and I was a senior. I was over it, the drama, the nonsense assignments, having to wear certain clothes and listen to lectures about statistics.

Music played through my headphones as I walked to my locker, grabbing a textbook.

"Clara?" One of my headphones was tugged out of my ear and I spun to the side, seeing my best friend, Gwen, leaning against the locker next to me. She tapped her doc martens on the floor impatiently, and I pulled out my other headphone, shutting off the music.

"Hey," I slammed my locker shut and turned to face her. I took her iced coffee from her hand and drank some.

"Dude, listen, there's a party tonight, and you've gotta be there." She said before grabbing her coffee back.

"Gwen, I don't want to party." I told her flatly as we walked to class.

"Yeah, I really don't care. You need to get out, interact with some people. It's not an option. It's a Friday night, you have the whole rest of the weekend to do whatever you want." Gwen gave me one of her famous 'looks'.

I knew I would never win an argument against my stubborn best friend. She always got her way, and whether I liked it or not, I knew I would somehow end up at that party.

"Are we getting ready at your house or mine?" She asked, taking a seat next to me in our history class.

"Yours." I answered immediately.

"Okay. Is your dad still being a dick?" She whispered as other students took their seats around us. I didn't really want to talk about my daddy issues with all the gossipy teens around, so I just nodded.

"You know, like, you can always come stay with me." She said.

"Yeah, I know."

"Okay, we'll swing by your house on the way, and you can grab your shit." She squeezed my hand.

🌸

After school, I followed Gwen to the parking lot, where she clicked the keys to her Lexus, unlocking the sports car for us. She insisted on stopping by Starbucks on the way to my house, getting her second iced coffee of the day. Old music came through her speakers, the usual ABBA, Queen, Elton John, and The Beatles as we drove.

I breathed a sigh of relief when we pulled up to my house and my dad's car wasn't in the driveway.

"I'm coming in with you." Gwen jumped out of the car and we entered my house, hurrying upstairs to my bedroom. She immediately threw open my closet, digging through my clothes to find me an outfit for the party that fit her approval.

"We'll just use my makeup and stuff. Come on." She said once she had tossed my things into a bag.

"Wait, I want to see the outfit first!" I protested.

"Nope."

She ran downstairs and I followed her back out to her car. I saw my dads car pull down the street and I climbed into the Lexus.

"We gotta go." I told her and she nodded. She pulled out and we drove to her family's huge house, that was just ten minutes from my crappy neighbourhood. Her ultra modern, sleek home was the exact opposite of mine, like a lot of other things about her life.

Gwen's family was very wealthy, and she was the youngest of five, her parents were happily married, both lawyers, and they loved their children. They had a large home in one of the best neighborhoods in Chicago, and Gwen had everything she could ever want.
