"After work I've got to attend a gala. Join me, I've got a formal dress for you. I promise I will not leave your side. We'll stay for a while and have some drinks then leave." Kells promised me.
"Okay." I nodded.
"Wait, but where did you get me a dress?"
"I know your size. I had the girl from dinner the other night pick it out." He said, and pointed to a bag in the closet.
"I'll be back to come get you, then we'll leave at 7." Kells kissed me deeply. He apologized for having to go to work meetings, but I promised him it was okay.
I laid on the bed watching Netflix when my phone rang.
"Hello?"
"Why weren't you at school yesterday? And where the hell are you today?!" Gwen's voice came through the phone.
"Um... I'm in St. Louis. I'll head home tomorrow and be at school on Thursday." I answered.
"You better be!"
"I will." I promised.
"What are you even doing in St. Louis?"
"Work trip with Kells."
"Damn girl, get it." Gwen giggled.
"I did" I whispered and she shrieked.
"Good for you! Is he big?" She gasped and I confirmed, laughing.
We talked on the phone until I finally insisted I had to go so I could be ready when Kells came to pick me up. I said goodbye and told her I would see her on Thursday.
I did my hair so it was pulled up off of my neck and shoulders and did natural makeup before going to see the dress. It was a gorgeous shade of blue, and it reached down to the floor with a slit up the side. It was strapless but fit me well, and I spun around in it, the skirt swirling.
"You look stunning." Kells said, coming into the room.
"It's beautiful." I ran my fingers down the smooth material.
"It's going to be okay. Do you trust me?" Kells asked before we left.
"Yes."
I kissed him, and we went to the gala. I saw Diablo speaking with the men from last night when we entered the elaborately decorated venue. I knew it was for a business they laundered money through, but it still felt real.
"Colson, Clara, you made it. Are you feeling better?" Diablo asked me.
"Yes, very much." I nodded. My fingers were laced with Kells' and he didn't let go of me the whole night. We had champagne and spoke with important people, and I stayed on Kells' arm.
"Would you like some?" Diablo asked, holding up a small vile of white powder.
"She wouldn't." Kells snapped protectively, wrapping his arm around my waist. I declined, but Diablo asked again.
"No, thank you."
Kells had had enough, and that's when we left. Diablo seemed displeased by that, but Kells promised me it was alright, and we just needed to go home.
🌸
The ride home relaxed me, my feet up on the dashboard. I listened to music with Kells and ate snacks with him.
We made it back to my empty house Wednesday evening, and Kells helped me take my bag inside.
"You sure you don't want me to stay?" He asked, kissing me slowly.
