The sun was hidden behind clouds and a dark sky. Many people agreed that today was no different than any other.
Ever since started witches and wizards thriving in 400 B.C. many of the creatures mother nature messed up on, started disappearing randomly. Nobody ever thought much about it, but it concerned me, especially since the survivors of The Sleeping claimed they knew what happened. We weren't supposed to trust them though, because they supposedly went crazy and died.
"Mayan stop fighting!" My mother shouted at me as I tried to run away from the guards that gripped my wrist tight.
I didn't know what I did. All I knew in that moment was that there was no sun to watch over me as the strong knights took me away from my family.
The knights dragged me all the way to the center of the village before dropping me and my best friend, Ansel in the death circle.
That wasn't the real name, but if someone dropped you in there, there was a 20% chance you were coming out alive.
Villagers gathered around Ansel and I. Some looked at us in sympathy knowing what would happen and others looked at us with glee because they wanted to watch the show.
Everyone parted way as the leader of our village walked through. He admitted to never liking the Sleepings once, but I've watched him during them. He does nothing but smile and eat freshly picked fruit.
"Last night Mayan Gee and Ansel Juke were shown they were reading to face The Sleeping." The leader announced.
I wanted to cry, no one our age had ever been put though the sleeping. Most people weren't chosen until their thirties or forties, Ansel and I were only 13.
"Lay down Mayan and Ansel," The leader instructed. We did as instructed warm tears falling down our cold cheeks. "This will hurt a lot, only the best will make it." Everyone winced or flinched at the end knowing that Ansel and I were as good as dead. No one at the age of thirteen would be good enough to survive The Sleeping. The heiress must have made a mistake when she chose Ansel and I to be the next participant for The Sleeping.
"Close your eyes," This request was harder than it seems. I wanted to look around at the world more before I was met with the darkness, but I did as they said and closed my eyes.
With our eyes closed Ansel and I gripped our hands together. We were going to die together. There wasn't going to be someone to comfort the other as they went to the afterlife, there was just death for us.
"It's starting," One whispered.
It took all my courage not to open my eyes and look at my glowing body. I could already feel the heat spreading through my body. It wasn't a good heat like 'ahh it's nice out.' It was more like 'AHHH it's like being dipped in lava over and over again!'
Soon my head started pounding like someone was beating it. My mind finally snapped at that point, I was going to die.
When the sleeping started, I knew it wasn't going to be like a nice nap, but I didn't think it would hurt so much. Physically and mentally.
Screams echoed in my head, and my vision was switching every five seconds. Sometimes it showed the inescapable darkness and other times it showed someone running through the woods while arrows and torches were being thrown at them. My vision started flickering to a blazing fire. Then to a skull, and to wolf, and then to blood. Just in a circle. Nothing else just those images.
Then it stopped, the pain stayed, but my vision stopped switching between different things.
It didn't stop for long soon it went to a blinding white room where there were two yellow doors. Ansel stood next to me. I wanted to say something to him, anything but right before I could my vision started switching between things again.
Blood dripping from someones mouth, two wolfs staring at the full moon, a large fire with two shadows next to it, a glass breaking, a knife, and the white room. It was switching fast, I couldn't even get a good look at any of them. Then I screamed.
I heard glass breaking and people gasping. I opened my eyes to people staring at me with wide eyes. Almost everything had been broken because of me.
Then I remembered that Ansel was also sent into the sleeping, but unlike me who sat up fast and breaking everything in sight, Ansel laid their pale and not moving.
