"Hello?" His voice boomed through the phone, causing the brunette to grit his teeth in slight annoyance, "Oh, Oikawa. What do you need? It has been a while after all."
"Yeah— I wanted to check on how Y/N-chan was, is she good?" He asked, rubbing his temples.
"Yes. She's going back to Miyagi for the holidays soon," Ushijima answered, pausing before adding on, his brows furrowed, "This is odd. You don't call me that often."
"Ushijima-san? Who is that?" A familiar voice called out from his line, only to earn no response.
Sighing, Oikawa's annoyance quickly fled as he gulped, "I wanted to ask you a question about-"
"Y/N loves you very much, if that is what you wanted to know."
"Really?" He exclaimed, face slightly heating up as he earned odd stares from passerbys, "A-Anyways, say, hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to marry Y/N-chan... Would you give me your blessing?" Oikawa asked, his tone trembling from how nervous he felt. Just when he thought it would've been fine, panic rushed through him once the line went silent, earning no words from Ushijima.
"..."
Gasping slightly, Ushijima was taken back by the question. Next to him, Kageyama, raised a brow in confusion, "What's wrong?" He asked before taking a drink from his water bottle.
Lowering the phone, he turned to the setter, "Oikawa is asking for my blessings."
"For what?"
"My sister's hand in marriage."
Instantly, there was the sound of Kageyama choking on his drink— coughing before wiping the water off with his arm, "Oikawa's marrying the Grand Queen?!"He exclaimed, unaware of the brunette listening in to the conversation, "They're still together?"
"Grand... Queen?" The ace trailed off, confusion settling, only for Kageyama to freeze at his words.
"H-Hinata used to call her that a lot. Something about her being Oikawa's girlfriend and playing volleyball... Yeah." He stated awkwardly, fiddling with his sides.
"I see," Ushijima nodded as if he had taken absolutely important knowledge, "But yes, he wishes to marry her."
"Ushiwaka!" Oikawa whined through the phone, "Stop talking to Tobio and give me an answer, please! My life depends on this!"
"Apologies, but if you'll excuse me." Standing up, he gave Kageyama a small nod before leaving into a more private area, "Oikawa."
"Yeah?"
"I'm grateful for you making my sister happy. I can't say much but please realise that I owe you for this."
"T-Then—"
"Please keep making her happy. I'm sure she'll say 'yes' when you propose."
Happy, Oikawa was unable to form his appreciation into words, "Thank you, Ushijima. I'll try my best— thank you, so much for this."
"But don't think I'll welcome you with open arms if you decide to hurt her again." The olive-brown haired male threatened, his voice lowering as his gaze darkened. He could sense Oikawa flinching from his words, hearing him let out a 'tch'.
"I won't— otherwise I wouldn't want to marry her."
—
With his phone in hand, Oikawa continued to make his way through the airport, his free hand gripping his luggage. His lips were curved up, the feeling of joy and excitement bubbling up even more as he was finally home, at last. Truthfully, no matter how happy he was— it wasn't able to fend off the guilt he felt. Though they would often call, it was upsetting for them as they never saw each other physically ever since he had left for Argentina.
It was absolutely frustrating— even worse, it was ruining his plan. This was a once in a life time chance— he had to get himself together. It was absolutely a struggle. Most of his nights were spent staying up late to video call Y/N— who in turn did the same while constantly lecturing him about his health and sleep schedule despite doing it herself. It was difficult sleeping alone, not having her to be with him when all he craved for was her and her alone.
His connections with his friends from high school weren't as strong as before. Seeing as each of them parted in their own separate ways, it was almost impossible to keep track of communicating. But the sight of them liking and commenting on each other's social media's never failed to bring a smile on their face. Oikawa was more surprised to realised he had spoken about his plan on marrying Y/N to Ushijima first.
His worst rival before Kageyama.
But it wasn't like he had a choice. He was her brother after all— it was only natural to ask for his blessings before asking her for her hand in marriage. Over the years of their relationship, Oikawa's experienced countless times where Ushijima was extremely protective towards his baby sister (especially when he found out they did the nasty, he almost died) and as much he hated admitting it, it was fucking scary.
He always looked ready to kill someone whenever they held such disrespect towards her.
It was no joke.
That was when he realised how dear Y/N truly was to Wakatoshi— especially after being neglected by their mother through most of her life. While they were on neutral terms, it wasn't like Oikawa had already forgave her for almost forcing Y/N into an arrange marriage or her verbal abuse, and many other things she had done.
"I can't bring myself to ask her," He would tell himself. He had a weird feeling about it— it felt odd, no, wrong.
Why should he ask her when she never cared for Y/N?
Oikawa was more set on asking for none other than Takashi Utsui's blessings instead of her.
Little did he know, his future father-in-law had already received the news from his future brother-in-law.
—
"Y-You want to get married?" His spiky haired friend stammered, eyes widening in surprise when the brunette nodded, "Who is it?"
"Aha, Iwa-chan!" Oikawa exclaimed, laughing as his cheeks rose with red, "I thought you would've known already!"
"In all those years I've known you, I know for a fact your relationships never last that long," Iwaizumi chuckled, teasing his friend, "So who's the lucky girl? You haven't spoken to me about this sort of stuff since high school."
"You don't know?" The setter hummed, his eyes visible with curiosity, "Hm... Try and guess."
"Oi, I don't have time for that!" Iwaizumi grumbled, gritting his teeth in annoyance. But the sight of his best friend's pure look of happiness caused him to sigh in defeat, "I don't know. Is it someone you met from Argentina?"
Oikawa shook his head.
"Well, whoever that girl may be, I hope she knows how lucky she is." The former ace smiled, patting Oikawa's back— who only bursted into fits of chortles.
"It's Y/N-chan!" He laughed, unable to contain his excitement.
Stopping in his tracks, Iwaizumi froze from the name, "Y/N...?" His face showed confusion— in disbelief at the fact that his friend managed to keep up a relationship running longer than he thought— not for months, not a year— but five years?!
"You're still together? I thought you two broke up because of volleyball." The ace took a seat next to his friend on the couch, crossing his arms as he awaited for Oikawa's response. The pair ignored the channels flashing on the television, only the sound of pans clanking from the kitchen as his mother prepared dinner could be heard.
"She's the one." He breathed out, his gorgeous orbs sparkling with joy. Though short, Hajime never failed to see the love and affection in his best friend's eyes, watching as his lips curve up from the feelings he harboured for Y/N.
Chuckling, he ruffled Oikawa's hair, snapping him out of his love struck daze, "Go for it."
"Iwa-"
"She stayed with your annoying ass this whole time. I don't know why I'm surprised but I should've expected this," Hajime sighed, pausing and then face palming himself, "I'm so happy for you."
