Giggles arouse from across the room. "7... 6... 5..." I spoke loudly and confidently as if the room wasn't nearly empty. My hands were still covering my eyes as I remained sitting still and cross-legged in the living room of our single level apartment. "4... 3... 2... 1...Ready or not, here I come" finally inching my hands off my face. I peaked around the room, catching the movement behind the curtain in front of the couch. "I wonder where they could be..." I puzzled aloud. Heavily carrying my feet around the room, announcing differing objects as I moved them. "How will I ever find..." At that very moment the curtain opened and I was pounced on, two little hands being thrown around my neck."I was right here Mama" my little boy grinned, his green eyes staring up at me with admiration. "Did I do a good job?" He whispered.
"The very best, I've never seen anything like it Mason" I whispered softly back. He closed his eyes, his button nose scrunching up as he inhaled my comforting scent. Finally settling, his body quieted as he snuggled himself into the depth of my neck. This little guy was my greatest comfort and I found myself most at ease when he was in my arms. I sunk deeper into the worn steel blue couch, listening to his quiet breathing. I watched the sun fall into the mouth of the ocean, the cape of darkness melting behind it overcoming the sky.
2 years, 4 months and 7 days. That had been how long it had been since I was home, since I had been in Blue Dusk territory since I had ran the woods I had once held to my heart so dearly. My little boy shifted in my arm, letting out a final sigh he rested, his full weight resting into me. He was getting bigger and was quick to outgrow the fun things like blanket wraps around my stomach. Mase was much further developed than the other tots his age. He had started crawling, walking and talking at such a progressed speed, his most recent favourite hobby was towing me around behind him when he walked. The connection I had with him was strong and he would never allow me out of his sight, often satisfied with a spot on my hip or above my shoulders.
I had been grateful some days for his rate of development other days not so much, I had been able to get him potty trained over the last couple months. However, much to my dismay his round baby cheeks were beginning to thin out and had began to grow much taller. He had always been a sweet boy, as an infant I am sure he laughed and gurgled more than he cried. His protectiveness over me was clear, the alpha blood in him wanting me to be just as cared for as he was. The two of us tried to stay as uninvolved in the pack, I surrounded us with humans as regularly as possible. I was worried that someone would find out about Mason, about who he was. The son of a powerful alpha, an alpha with a lot of enemies, my boy would become their first target and that was something I was able to give up. I'm sure the pack members we had met were curious, obvious to the powerful aura he gave off at such a young age but no one had started asking questions, yet.
I gently took my youngster to his small room, just settling him with nothing but a light blanket, although I knew by morning I would find him in bed beside me. I heard the loud shrill of my phone, I swore running through the apartment trying to find where Mase had hid it earlier in the evening. I finally found it in a pile of toys, and was able to answer it with a whisper of a hello as I heard Mason shift in his bed. I quieted and tiptoed past his door, leaving it just a crack open so I could hear in on him.
I had heard my name being called through the phone but it wasn't until I reached my couch that I had responded. Flopping down on the well loved couch I answered hello into the phone once again. "Damn Scar, took you long enough..." I heard Jax's familiar voice fan into the phone. "What are you doing, do you have guests ov... do you have a guy over maybe?" he asked with a quickened tone as he mentioned the idea of me and some guy. He h ad been recently pushing me to start dating, as if.
"The only guy that will spend a night in this apartment is Mason." I snapped back quickly at him. "What's going on, is everything okay?"I used to change the topic, peering at the clock that sat on top of stove, it would be approaching almost 10 due to the time change at Blue Dusk.
