Sherlock POV
I did not sleep.
Not even briefly.
Not that this was unusual.
Sleep had always been inconvenient. A waste of valuable time when there were cases to solve, patterns to find, criminals to predict.
But last night was different.
Last night my mind was not occupied with Moriarty.
It was not occupied with crimes.
It was occupied with one thing.
Mykala.
More specifically...
The ring.
The small black velvet box sat in my pocket for hours.
A ridiculous thing, really.
A tiny object that somehow carried more weight than any weapon I had ever held.
I had solved impossible cases.
I had outsmarted criminals.
I had faked my own death.
But asking one question?
That seemed significantly more difficult.
Because this wasn't about deduction.
There was no guarantee.
No evidence.
No certainty.
Just emotion.
And emotions were unpredictable.
Something I had spent my entire life avoiding.
---
The first light of morning crept through the windows of 221B as I sat in my chair, newspaper open in front of me.
I wasn't actually reading it.
Not properly.
I was scanning the pages for anything unusual.
Anything that suggested Moriarty was making a move.
Anything that would explain why the silence had continued for so long.
Nothing.
Of course.
The quiet was always worse.
I heard footsteps above me before the door opened.
Mykala appeared with the twins beside her, both dressed in their school uniforms.
Joseph was attempting to fix his tie.
Boo was holding a book about planets.
Naturally.
"You're going to be late," I stated.
Mykala smiled.
"Good morning to you too."
She walked over and kissed my cheek.
A simple gesture.
One that still caused my brain to momentarily stop functioning.
"Just dropping the children off at school. Then I'll be back to collect my things for work."
She grabbed her bag.
"See you later."
And then she was gone.
Out of 221B.
Out of my reach.
Again.
I watched through the window as she guided the children into the car.
