Just a disclaimer, this is not a geographical lesson about Athens. This is a myth about how it got its name.

Most people should know what Athens was named after. If you didn't know, spoiler alert, its Athena. But some people may not know why this place was named after the goddess Athena, well unless you do, then just skip over this chapter, it is going to be relatively short.

According to the myth, Athens was created by Cecrpos and the city was named after him, Cecropia. Athens is very beautiful and once the gods saw it from Olympus the decided that they wanted one of them to be named after it and become its patron. Athena and Poseidon became rivals fought over the island and Zeus said that each of them will make one gift and Cecrpos would choose the best one which would then be named after the place and become its patron. Poseidon shows his gift first and when he hits a rock with his trident a spring of water appears which means that if Cecrpos picks Posiden Cecropia would have unlimited access to water. But Cercrpos doesn't really want to choose Posiden because the water is salty which makes sense because Posiden is the god on the sea, not the god of springs. For Athena's gift, she plants a seed which then turns into an olive tree and Cecrpos chooses Athena's gift because Cecropia then has a food source, firewood, and oil. Then Cecropia is named after Athena.

     The end.

I told you that this was a short chapter.
