Most of us probably know who Hades and Persephone are, Hades is the god of the underworld and Persephone is the goddess of spring. People also probably know how they got married but I'm gonna tell you this myth anyway because what's more romantic then kidnapping you're future wife?
There are two myths that I found about this story. The first one being the version that is less well know and the second one is the version with the pomegranate. I'm gonna talk about both of them because I have to provide content...
So the first version! Hades basically fell in love with Persephone because when he was making his rare visit to earth he saw her picking flowers. He told Zeus about his secret and they made a plan.
Hades split the ground underneath Persephone while she was playing with her friends and fell to the underworld. She really hated it there but soon she learned to love Hades. So it's basically just Stockholm syndrome. On to the next one! So this time we have Demeter, mother of Persephone, in this better known version. Demeter came down to Earth with Persephone and Demter left Persephone so then Persephone went to go play with the sea nymphs. In this version Hades still gets help from Zeus.(the god of one night stands)
While Persephone was playing she smelt a very fragrant valley near by and she really wanted to see the flower narcissus. She asked her friends to go to the valley with her but they obviously couldn't gi because if they were to leave the water they would die. Mainly because their body was made out of water though. So Persephone went there by herself but what she didn't know that the flower was planted by Zeus and it was a trick to lure Persephone.
Persephone is having a great time though dancing and running in the flowers until she picks one of the narcissus. She had to use all of her energy to pick it and when she finally got it she saw a hole in the ground that grew into a chasm so she probably screamed. Any way, Hades came out of the hole and grabbed Persephone but one of her sea nymph friends Cyan tried to help but failed and then cried making the river Cyane. How she got out of the water in the first place? I have no idea but whatever I guess.
So Demeter came back and asked where Persephone was because all of the sea nymphs were crying. No one knew where she was though so Demeter turned them into sirens who are hideous creatures by the way. Cyane did help kind of though. But Demeter searched for awhile until Hecate, the goddess of magic, said the Persephone was in the underworld.
Demeter begged to have Persephone back and Hades and Zeus decided that Persephone could only stay on earth for six months every year and the return to earth for the remaining four. But Hades also thought ahead and had Persephone eat four pomegranate seeds because maybe she was hungry. But in ancient mythology if you ate your captors food you have to stay with them so if Presephone tried to stay on Earth for the full year she couldn't.I honestly like the first one better because Persephone actually likes Hades back because Hades is one of the most normal gods. His dog Cerberus might even be named Spot! But both of them liking each other would be nice.
The End
