Title: A New Addition
CW: foul language, mention of death, violence, usage of knifeI leave my house, the snow crunching under my shoes with every step I take. I walk along the sidewalk, making my way to the cafe down the street. I pass the park, glancing over as someone squeals. I look at a boy, my neighbor Benjamin, I realize, who's being pushed by another. "Stop it! I told you, I didn't do it!"
"Come on, Benny.." The boy laughs, gripping his collar. "I know you snitched. I just want to hear you say it."
"But I didn't—"
He's interrupted by the boy's fist, which collides with his cheek. The impact of the blow sends him to the ground. "You know, you're a horrible liar." The boy chuckles, kicking him in the side. I wince, having stopped on the sidewalk by now. "I thought you were in theatre? Aren't you supposed to be good at acting?" Another kick. A second boy picks him up and holds him up for the other to punch.
I huff and march over. I barely know Benjamin, but I've talked to him enough to know he's a good guy. "Hey." The boy looks over curiously, his fist raised for another punch. "Let go of him."
"You got a girlfriend?" He asks Benjamin.
"No." He mutters, wiping the blood from his lip with his shoulder.
"Then who's she?" He looks over at me.
Benjamin gazes at me, shaking his head slightly. "I don't know." He mouths 'leave.'
I stare at him in disbelief. I'm not going to leave him. "We're neighbours." I say. "He lives across the street from me."
Benjamin hangs his head, sighing. "Your neighbour? I thought you didn't know her." He asks the beaten boy. "That's the second lie today, Benny, your ice has just gotten thinner." He says, fist raised again.
"Hey, I said let him go!" I yelp, running forwards. Benjamin receives two more blows before I get in front of him, the next punch hitting my eye. I stagger, crashing to the ground with a grunt. "Don't hit him.. Not again."
The boy looks down at me, amused. He stares at my eye, which is surely bruised. "Let him go, Joey." Said boy releases Benjamin, who collapses in the snow. "Let's go." The two walk off, leaving me and Benjamin behind.
I grab some snow and hold it to my eye as I crawl over, ignoring the ice that dampens my pants. "Are you okay?" I ask. "Anything broken?"
"You shouldn't have said anything." He mumbles, holding his side. "You don't want to mess with those guys, they're crazy."
"Who were they?" I ask, offering some of the snow on the ground.
"They were just two of the four engaged in a group called the Legion." He says, taking the snow and pressing it to his cheek. "It's typical that they deal with anyone that gets in their way. They're bad kids, Y/n."
"Why were they after you?" I ask.
"I called the cops after I caught them breaking into Stacy's house."
"And they knew?"
"Of course they did." He looks at me, eye bruised worse than mine. "You just gotta believe me when I say.. stay away from them."
I nod, biting my tongue. He stands up, declining my help. He limps off without another word as I get up with a frown. The Legion? I head to the cafe, only craving a warm drink more than before. I enter the cozy building, a bell ringing over my head.
Kenneth Sawyer, a worker I'm aquatinted with looks over at my arrival. He startles, eyes wide as he takes in my new bruise. "Jeez, what happened to you?"
