Chapter 17: Escape From The City

"Espio, come on. You have to get up, we need to go!" Ray urged as he tried to help his friend to his feet. Despite the great pain Espio felt in his abdomen he forced himself to stand up. Ray grabbed his hand and they headed for the front door with Espio limping behind Ray.

They exited the house and started down the street. "We need to find Mighty, come on!" Ray said as he lead Espio through the city. They both left their communicators in Ray's room so they couldn't call Mighty or anyone else. It had been a few minutes of crossing streets and rushing down sidewalks.

Espio struggled to keep up with Ray, but soon they were almost out of the city. "Come on, Espio! We're almost there!" Ray said. They ran past the city gates and were now in the open. After a few more yards Espio, no longer able to bear his pain, fell to his hands and knees whimpering and sobbing.

"Espio, please we can't stop now! You have to get up, come on!" Ray urged again. Espio shook his head. "I can't." he struggled to say. Ray was scared and didn't know what to do. Jack was probably gonna find them at any moment. He wished he had his communicator to call Mighty or anyone.

Much sooner than later Jack left the city and found the two Mobians a few yards outside of it. "Thought you could run away, did ya?" he asked as he stepped closer to Espio. Ray stood between the two chameleons. "Go away! I won't let you hurt Espio!" Ray shouted.

"I already hurt him, brat. Now move it!" Jack said. "No!" Ray yelled back. Jack, now fed up, slapped the squirrel across the face with the back of his hand. Ray fell to the ground and blacked out from the impact. Espio only looked on helplessly at the situation and continued breathing heavily and whimpering.

Jack gave him a devilish smile. "Don't worry, Vegge. I'll take you to a more comfortable place to have your kids." he said.

Meanwhile

Mighty had just finished tending to the garden and was on his way back home when he saw something yellow on the ground. He took a few steps closer and saw a big bushy tail. "Ray?! Ray!!" he cried as he ran to the unconscious squirrel. He knelt beside him and cradled him.

"Ray! Buddy, wake up! Please say something!" he said in a panic. Ray stirred a bit before opening his eyes halfway to look into a familiar face. "M-Mighty...? Wha...?" "Buddy, what happened?" Mighty asked. Ray sat up in his lap. "He took him. Jack took Espio." he said.

"What?!" "He broke in a-and he had a knife. Greg was with him. E-Espio went into labor." Ray stuttered. Mighty's expression turned from shocked to furious. He stood up and headed for the city, carrying Ray. He also dialed Silver's number on his communicator.

"Mighty, what's up?" Silver soon answered. "Jack found my old home and kidnapped Espio!" Mighty told him. "Huh?!?! How?!?!" Silver asked in great shock. "He took Espio?!" came Sonic's voice in the background. "That slime ball!" Knuckles shouted in the back.

"I'm on my way to the house now." Mighty said. "We'll meet you there." Silver said before hanging up. Soon Mighty was back at his old home. The door was lying on the floor instead of standing. Mighty entered the house and noticed blood by the base of the staircase.

He looked up the stairs and noticed something dark at the top. "That's Greg." Ray told him. Mighty went up to get a better look. Sure enough it was the all black iguana laying in a small puddle of blood. Mighty knelt down and shook him a little. "Hey, wake up." he said.

Greg groaned a bit before opening his eyes, then he slowly turned around and saw the armadillo. "What the heck happened?" Mighty asked. Greg sat up and against a wall. "I was gonna help Jack kidnap your buddy, but I could no longer go through with it.

Me and him fought but he stabbed me and knocked me out. Your friend fell down those stairs and went into labor. Sorry." Greg explained feeling ashamed of himself. Soon footsteps could be heard in the living room. "Mighty! Mighty, we're here!" Silver called.

He had brought Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, Rouge, Sally, and Larry. Silver went upstairs and saw Greg. "Greg? What are you doing here?" he asked. "Never mind him! Where did Jack take Espio?!" Sonic asked. "We were able to make it out of the city, but Espio had to stop and then Jack caught us. He knocked me out so I don't know where he took Espio." Ray explained.

Everyone's attention turned to Mighty when they heard him scream in a rage and punch the wall. "How could I let that stupid piece of crap take Espio?!" he asked in a shout. "I should've stayed with him! I should've stayed!!!" he yelled. Everyone in the house knew Mighty was really hating himself at the moment. Silver tried to comfort him.

"Mighty, don't blame yourself. It's not your fault. We'll find Espio and bring him back safely, I assure you." he said. Mighty's ears fell flat against his head as he started sobbing. "I-I should've protected him better. I should've been there, but I wasn't and now he's in Jack's hands again." he said as he fell to his knees with his face in his hands.

It was rare to see Mighty break down, all his friends knew him as a tough guy, but everyone has their breaking point. Silver knelt beside him and put a hand on his shoulder. "Come on, Migh. It's not too late. We can still find him and rescue him." he said. Ray also went up and hugged his shelled brother.

"We'll find him, Mighty. I know it." he said. Mighty lifted his head up and sniffled as he wiped his face with his gloves. "Right. We'll find him. We just have to look." he said regaining his confidence. Silver gave him a pat on the back. "There we go, buddy. Now let's start searching." he said.

"We should start with Jack's house." Shadow suggested. "But we don't know where he lives." Knuckles said. "We do. Me, Larry and Greg know exactly where his house is." Sally said. "Then lead us to it." Mighty told her.
