Domestic Husbands

Chapter 11

My phone vibrates in my pocket as I walk. I take it out to look and as I read the message from dad about a deal, I feel someone grab me and push me away. It's mum. She seems panicked and is breathing heavily and then I see a car. She doesn't need to explain, I know what happened.

Kathy: Are you ok?

Ben: yeah... Are you?

Kathy: you need .. .. careful. Not looking .. your phone and walking. Especially ... y.u can't hear Ben.

Ben: *cutting her off* yeah sorry mum.

Mum looks around to see the driver of the car. They seem to be in a state so she goes over to check on them. I stay here, still a little shocked to move, and I feel like she'll want to tell me I'm stupid or something.

Kathy:  Hi, sorry. Are you ok? .

Driver: erm...erm... Erm. Yeah i. I think so. I'll be fine in a bit.

Kathy: sorry about my son. He didn't mean too.

Driver: he just stepped out in front of me. He shouldn't have been on his phone. Is he ok?

Kathy: yeah. I will be having words with him about being on his phone. I'm ok, he's ok. We're both ok.

Driver: *sighs* Good. He needs to get his hearing check if he couldn't hear me coming, even looking at his phone. My music was on full volume.

Kathy: erm yeah... *awkward silence*  well anyway, as long as your good to go, we will leave you too it. Sorry again.

I see her walking towards me and before I know it, she's pulled me into the cafe for a tea. I really need to reply to dad and get to work but I can't let her know what we are up too. She sits down opposite me and places two mugs on the table.

Kathy: Ben, you need to look at where you are.

Ben: yeah I know, I'm sorry. I was just glancing at who messaged me.

Kathy: must have been important, or someone special.  What did Callum want?

Ben: oh no. It was dad.

Kathy: ah. You two better not be doing something dodgy again. I know you two.

Ben: no no. He just wanted me to go round to talk. It's nothing to worry about mum. Remember, I'm not a criminal anymore. I've gone straight since getting with Callum. PC Highway can't have a Mitchell boyfriend. He's the only man I will turn straight for!

Kathy: *sighs* well I'm happy for you both. You need to get sorted and I need to get back to work.

We both get up, hug and she kisses me before going back to work. I sit back down to finish my tea before leaving as well.

I don't know if I should go to work or to dads first. I reply to his message and let him know I'm at the car lot if he wants to come and speak before making my way over there.

What did I say about an eventful day huh. I look at my watch, and it's still only 10am.
