"trust your emotions"
society says
happiness,
sadness,
love
"they're reliable"
society says
"emotions
make perfect sense
when you let them"
society says.
but since when was society ever right?
why should I trust
the chemicals in my brain?
what do they know
that the rest of me doesn't?
they're just chemicals
combinations of elements
flowing through my neurons
electrifying brain cells
telling me what to do.
I don't believe
in trusting my emotions,
but I can certainly
follow my heart.
no,
not in the way society means it
(because,
as we established earlier,
it's messed up)
but the way
science
means it.
hearts don't care.
whatever other people
say
think
do
they keep going.
hearts just breathe.
they beat to their own rhythm
breathe
in
and
out
reagrdless of the competition.
hearts are relentless.
for as long as they can
they
live
beating
until
they
literally
can't
ignoring the chemicals telling it to quit.
emotions can't be trusted,
much less followed.
but your heart knows what it's doing
and besides,
it can't be any more wrong than society is.
