So this might sound like it's about people telling you what to do, but I actually wrote this poem as a representation of people who try to tailor their lives to their college applications so much so that they lose themselves, or people who are forced to do that.
I happened to think of this because I have to figure out what I'm doing with the rest of my life before the calendar year ends or else my parents will pick for me.

no
of course it's fine
to be
soft
sweet
& kind
everything they ever wanted.
nod,
sit straight,
listen & execute
whatever they tell you to.
repress
your thoughts
until they bleed
you can't stop them from
escaping
speak your mind
then shut your mouth
your life isn't yours,
they'll decide what it's about
as the windows of your mind
shutter & close
as you pick the thorns
off of this wild rose
as you donate your life
& burn your prose
remember to listen
remember to wait
just keep in mind
that someday you'll
escape.
