After that night in The Rum House, everything changed just like I predicted it would. Mostly my mindset to be honest. I started trying to prepare for what my move to New York would entail.
Today was the day of the mix off, it was somewhere around 9AM and the students and I were just now meeting under our designated tent at the park where the performance was taking place.
As they gathered under the nice size tent, I couldn't contain how proud and excited I was. They'd all decided to dress up as the cast of Breakfast Club. It was so classically cool and I seriously felt like we had a chance of winning this thing. Even though, it didn't really matter to me, as long as the five of them had fun and wanted to keep working towards becoming amazing producers. My hope was that the friendships they'd made would last awhile, if not forever.
"Shit Monty, you really do look like John Bender! Are those extensions!?" Mya patted Monty's wig... or extensions. He clearly took the whole dress up thing major serious.
Everyone else also did a really good job of embodying their chosen cast member. Mya was Claire, Julia was Allison, Reuben was Andrew, and Adam was Brian.
"Alright, alright guys," I stat down in one of the plastic chairs and motioned for them to take a seat on the grass. We had about an hour and a half before we had to officially be ready to perform. Of course it was required for us all to be early so that the stage crew could make sure everyone had everything that they needed. The park was also crowding extremely quickly, full of people who wanted to hear some great beats while enjoying food carts and warm weather. All of my friends were also set to come, I had added everyone to a group chat. Including Charlotte, Riley, and Phineous. Phin was also going to bring Tristen. To say that I was nervous would be an understatement, I wanted these kids to do well. I knew how much work they had put in after recording Julia's guitar sample. They would rehearse all throughout class, meet up at each others houses on the off days. Thankfully, the five of them were really talented. So learning how to work together on a single track, turned out to be simple for them. Now they were ready to get on that stage, each one of them standing behind their own production stand and contributing to some live work.
"Talia, thank you so much for being our teacher!" Reuben spoke after wrapping his arms around his knees.
My heart tugged a little, "Thank all of you for bearing with me, and making this job so much fun."
It was true, they made my first job working in music production so much fun. I remember how scared I was two months ago, how I felt to be teaching real teenagers something that they were paying for. It was so frightening, but I quickly got used to the five of them and I ended up looking forward to teaching them. I still couldn't believe that we were at the end.
About half an hour passed before Allison peeped her head into our tent. She was wearing black chinos with a t-shirt promoting the mix off.
"Hey kids!" She said out loud, causing the five of them to stop playing Mario Kart and look up at her.
