“Damn! Stupid thing!” Caitlin said as the van sputtered into a 24-hour truck stop.

They had been traveling awhile before finally coming to a stop in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. Smoke began to leak out of the hood.

“What happened?” Jessica said stepping to the front; her candy apple red pigtails swaying. Caitlin rested her head on the stirring wheel sighing.

“I don’t know, something’s wrong. The check engine light came on back in Tallahassee.”

“WHAT!? And you let us ride around in this.. this.. death machine?” Bella said jumping up from the back. Caitlin raised her head. She ran her fingers through her hair blending her blue highlights in with the brown, and looked back at Bella’s worried face.

“Calm your jeans Bella! The dealer told me it would come on occasionally because a fuse was missing or some shit.”

“And you believed that?” Her eyes were wide and her voice was higher pitched.

“It was a good deal!”

“It’s a piece of junk!” Her frizzed dark hair made her look crazy.

“Hey! Don’t hate on the love bug! It did get us out of Florida, remember?” Jessica interrupted. The girls looked at each other, then to Jessica who had started twisting at the light curl at the end of her right pigtail.

“Yea, hey Hedda do you think you could figure out what’s wrong?” Caitlin looked to Hedda who was in the passenger seat with her foot in the seat. She had been napping before the van acted up. She pulled her hand out of her electric blue hair and turned to Caitlin lowering her foot and pushing her glasses to her face.

“I’ll have to look at it.” She yawned.

“Well let’s go.” They all hopped out of their beloved red and white 79’ Volkswagen bus. They all stepped to the front as Caitlin lifted the hood. Smoke poured out making everyone step back waving at the air.

“Oh my god! We could have blown up!” Bella said coughing taking extra steps back.

“No actually that’s steam, and a lot of it.” Hedda said stepping forward fanning the motor.

“How can you be sure?” Bella said peeking around Jessica.

“Look.” She pointed up and the girls followed. “It evaporates before it gets passed the bus.” They all looked back down as Hedda stuck her head over searching, except Jessica who was still looking up with her hand to her forehead slowly turning with confusion on her face. “Ah ha! There’s the problem.” She pulled her head out. “The radiator is cracked.”

“Let me see.” Jessica moved beside Hedda. She looked where Hedda was pointing. “oooh.”

“Just great! That’s more money lost! We’re already running low.” Caitlin said crossing her arms.

“I’ll go in and ask if they have one inside or if they know where the nearest garage is.”

“Ok. Jesse!” Jessica quickly turned to Caitlin. “Go with Hedda in case something happens. I don’t want some late night perve getting all touchy feely.” Jessica saluted and nodded.
