SYNOPSIS: In 1970s Southern California, young Kevin Watson has high hopes for his new job as a teacher and coach. But his marriage suddenly becomes a long distance relationship, his boss develops an unexpected vendetta against him, and he is tested by some difficult students. Challenged to meet impossible standards while his personal life falls apart, Kevin will need steadfast determination, plus support from friends and family, if he hopes to make it through the year.
CHARACTERS:
Kevin Watson: committed to Monica, his fifth grade students, the athletes in six sports, his friends, and family.
Monica Carr Watson: his wife, picks business over grad school, new job an hour away, falls for her boss Derek.
Otto Smith: Kevin's principal, has conflicts with his new teacher's style, and is jealous of his coaching success.
Angela Reyes Miller: dance and choir teacher, becomes Kevin's closest friend. Her husband, Carl, is unfaithful.
Friends: Miguel (basketball), Stan (tennis), Johnny (colleague/reggae band) and Jodi (coach & Johnny's wife).
Work colleagues and mentors: Julie Fukuda, counselor, and Cassie Nez, instructional specialist.
Students and parents: many figure prominently in his classroom, on the teams he coaches, and in home visits.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Educators, coaches, parents, students, or anyone who has completed fifth grade.
GENRE: General fiction and it's a Romance. It has a central love story, and for me, a satisfying finish, but readers will choose to agree or not. It also addresses school, sports, history, humor, music, nature, and diversity.
AUTHOR: William T. (Bill) Geary. I've taught and coached, but this is fiction. All people and events are from my imagination and used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to anyone, living or dead, is coincidental. I live in Hawaii, where I write, hike, sing, read, dance, cook, and (whenever possible) hug friends and family.
INFO: peaceful content, a couple of herbal cigarettes, occasional colorful language as within someone's thoughts when upset, and love scenes but no private parts described
