Emily's POV

(the week after Emily's birthday)

We were in the hospital.

"Emily, I'm sorry that we didn't tell you earlier," Dad said. Tears were falling down my face. Mom was in her room. There were so many needles attached to her. I look down. The nurses went in to take her.

"Where are you taking my mom?" I asked one.

"She's going into surgery. They're going to see if they can remove the tumour." She said.

"The brain tumour?" I asked. She nodded. They took my mom and walked quickly to the surgery place.

"Come on Emily, let's go home," Dad said. We went to the truck and dad drove us home. It was quiet. When we got home, I got out of the truck and ran to the barn.

India's POV

Emily ran into here crying. I neighed for her attention. She opened my stall door and went to hug me.

"Baby," Dusty said. I snorted at him. He smirked at me.

"Mom, she has brain cancer. The nurses said." She sobbed. I rested my head on her. She doesn't deserve this. Her dad came in.

"Your Uncle Tom is coming." He said. Then he left. Emily opened my stall door and took me out. She tacked me up, then took me out of the barn.

"Wait, take me with you," Dusty shouted. He neighed for Emily's attention. When she looks at him, he kicked the stall door.

"I guess you should run around," Emily said. She went to open the stall. I thought I saw Dusty eyeing the way she opened it. When she opened the door, she grabbed a rope. She tied it around Dusty's neck and tied it around the horn of my western saddle. Dusty stared at it in confusion.

"In case you try to play any tricks," I explained. Emily mounted on me and nudged me into a gallop. Once I started galloping, Dusty must've taken that as a sign, because he scalloped right past us. Emily pulled me to a stop, and we watch Dusty. He went so far until the rope was as far as it could go. The rope pulled on him and took him down. Emily nudged me into a gallop.

"Dusty, you ok?" Emily asked. She got off of me and checked him.

"Did you seriously forget about the rope?" I asked.

"I forget about a lot of things when I run free. Don't you?" He said.

"No. I have a ride to make sure she still on me." I said. He stared at me.

"Nothing looks broken or anything," Emily said. He looks at Emily and I looked away from him. Emily went to my saddlebag and took an apple out. She gave it to him, and he ate it. Emily got back on me, and Dusty stood up.

"Now don't forget about the rope," I said to him. He rolled his eyes. Emily nudged me to a walk, and Dusty followed the lead.

"Why did you buck off every rider when you first came here?" I asked him.

"Because I didn't want them on me. Besides if they couldn't handle me, then I don't know why they're doing whatever style of riding they're doing." He said. "How come you do whatever the boys do, but yet your really good at jumping over things?" He asked.

"I was made to do showjumping and dressage. Emily's parents made me pick up western riding. It's fun, just I prefer to do showjumping and dressage." I said. We were quiet for a moment.

"Gopher hole." He said. I was confused, then I fell.

"India!" Emily shouted. She lifted herself up, she must've hurt her left hand, because she wasn't moving it. I tried to stand up, but it hurt to move my legs. Emily to a pocket knife out of her boot.

"Woah, she has that in her boot all the time?" Dusty asked.

"Dusty go back to the ranch and get help," Emily said. Dusty stared at the rope as she cut it. When it was cut he stood in place for a moment. Emily must really trust him because he could go back to his herd and we will never see him again. He then turned around and took off in a fast gallop. I hope he's going to get help.
