"Have a seat Scarlet and chew neatly."
Aunt Lola said grimly.

"But I'm so hungry"
I said in between chews.

Suddenly I could imagine Mop hair standing in front of me. I could clearly remember the grating sound of her voice as I imagined her saying, "Mama says not to talk with your mouth full" and I almost started laughing there.

Hesitantly, I grabbed a seat at the far end of the table away from my aunt and sat down cautiously.
I stared at her. She stared back at me.
For about a minute, we were pin drop silent as we stared at each other. Finally, she broke the silence.
Scarlet, 1 Aunt Lola, 0
I win this round. Hahaha.

"You don't have to stop eating. Finish up and then we'll talk."

Okay?
I started eating as slowly and neatly as I could, making sure my spoon was not too full and my mouth didn't leak.
It was really awkward as she kept staring at me while I ate.

Finally, I finished the food, washed my plate in the sink and took my seat again. I was actually very nervous. It was very rare for Aunt Lola to be this grim. She was always very bubbly and times like this made me want to pee.

"Now tell me again where you were this morning and no lies this time."
She said with a voice that made my blood run cold.

"I. Was. Home"
I said between gritted teeth.
"I heard you coming up the stairs and I was frustrated. I pulled up the covers and tried to make myself smaller so you wouldn't see me. Thankfully you didn't. Sometimes I wish disappearing was a gift. I could really use it now."
I mumbled the last part to myself.

I finished with a sigh as I slumped deeper into my chair.

My aunt was looking at me with wide eyes. Her face was paler than normal too.
"I think you actually disappeared."

"Halloween is a really long time from now Aunt Lola. No need trying to scare me with your stories. I'm not a baby anymore. Besides, why will I just disappear?"

With a stoic expression, she said something that completely knocked my world off its axis.

Or at least it tried to.

"Your mom was a fairy, Scar"

•••

"No offence Aunt Lola but fairies don't exist. At least not in real life, they don't!"

I scoffed. My mom, a fairy. If wishes were horses...
I'm sure she is just trying to prank me or something because this doesn't make any sense.

"I know you'll find it hard to believe but... "
I cut her off immediately.
"You're wrong. I don't find this hard to believe. It's impossible to believe"

She opened her mouth to say something but I cut her off again.
"And don't say 'impossible' also says 'I'm Possible' because everyone has used that line enough already."

She smiled sadly.
"I didn't think you'll start this early. I was prepping myself to tell you when you turned 19. Your mom started at 20"

"My mom was a fairy and you're her sister. Doesn't that make you a fairy too?"
I asked with my eyes closed. I could feel a serious headache coming on.

"Your mom was adopted. She wasn't my blood sister. My parents didn't think they were going to have children so they adopted her and it was a miracle that they had me."

My eyes snapped open and I was momentarily blinded by the light.
"I'm not believing that. No offense Aunt Lola, but I don't get what you're playing at and it is not funny at all."

I stood up immediately and a wave of nausea washed over me. I suddenly felt dizzy as I fell back into my seat.

"Scarlet, are you okay?"
Aunt Lola asked worriedly as she ran to me.

I shut my eyes for a moment to quietly converse with my stomach. Hey baby. I just fed you. This isn't the time to bring the food back up. You know how hungry you'll be.

I opened my eyes and I felt like I could see everything clearer. I didn't read too much into it. Probably just my eyes adjusting to the light.

"Yeah, I'm fine. All this gibberish is making me dizzy. I'm going to take a nap now."
I answered her as I stood up again. I winced as I felt a sharp pain on my back but I ignored it as I climbed the stairs to my room.

"My colleague at work and her family will be coming over for dinner tomorrow. Prepare."
My aunt called out after me, worry lines creasing her pretty face.

Laying my head on my pillow, I picked up my phone from the bedside drawer to check the time. It was 4:32pm. No missed calls, no new messages. I put my phone back on the top of the drawer and a quick glance at my hand showed my nails had grown considerably longer in such a short time.

Weird.

I can finally add my paranormal tag! Sorry if you thought the book was regular 😉
