A swirl of orange fire came spiralling towards us, too fast for me to react. I quickly covered my face with my arms, my clenched fists covering Cranky who still lay on my head. I shut my eyes tight as I felt a wave of heat cover me. But surprisingly, it was way cooler than I expected. I peeked one eye open to find Nevis, with his wing spread out in front of us, smoking slightly.
It wasn't only Nevis who thought of protecting me, Axel stood in front of me protectively. I suddenly felt guilty that I was only concerned about protecting myself and the sleeping beasty on my head. But then again, I didn't have the reaction time to do any better. As for Axel, I was amazed that he managed to leave from a metre away, and stand in front of me, his back facing the fire. "Uh.." I started awkwardly, just making Axel feel even more awkward.
He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment as he walked beside me, keeping a distance to cure the awkwardness a little. I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my right index finger that was still above my head from when I blocked from the fire. "Ouch!" I yelped as I pulled my hand down and grabbed my sore finger which had a small cut that was oozing blood. I frowned as I heard a sleepy bird respond to my pain with a chirp. He clearly didn't like a worm looking finger hanging in front of his face when he just woke up, but little did he know I was trying to save his little bird life.
"Heh sorry about that." Axel said, clearly still feeling awkward, but I just brushed it aside with a wave of my hand, "all good, I would've done the same if I had your reflexes." I realised that sentence didn't help our awkward situation at all, not only because I knew it wasn't true, but because it sounded awfully cringy. Finally the smoke had blown away and Nevis moved his wing to reveal a very surprised red dragon. He quickly jumped in front of Nevis and rubbed his head on Nevis's neck in an apologetic hug thing.
My guess was that he thought it was just Nevis there, who is obviously fire proof.
As I watched the two dragons greet each other affectionately, I decided they appeared to be mates. The red one was obviously Nevis's cranky wife.
And I was just about to say so, when Zane spoke, "That's Nevis's brother, Blaze the fire dragon. Their mother was a fire dragon and their father was an ice dragon, mixed breeds are becoming more common." he said casually. My eyes widened at the thought that I almost called Nevis's brother his wife.
"Well anyways, let's head back and see where General Theaven will have you sleep." Zane said as he turned and headed back the way we came, and I propared for a long, foot killing journey.🐲
The entrance was finally in our near sight after almost an hour of walking.
It was dark outside and it looked cold. I was glad we were in this volcano, which was plenty warm considering the walls were dropping with lava. I did wonder where all this lava went. Did it cool down by the time it reached the ground? Not likely, but what else could happen to it.
"There's the General." Axel said quietly and I looked up to spot him speaking to a few other dragons. From the way his mouth was moving I could tell he was speaking in growls and grunts.
As we walked closer I got a better look at the dragons he was talking to. One was a pink feathered dragon with pruple covering the very tips of each of her feathers. It appeared female, and she had a long muzzle, yellow eyes and a graceful stance that reminded me of a Queen.
The other other one was black and scaley and his eyes were even blacker than his scales- pitch black like an empty void. His expression was of a mixture of suspicion, seriousness and boredom. He was a little shorter than the General and female, but he was obviously still enormous. He had an aura of mystery when I looked at him, making me instantly not trust him.
The other one was very short and chubby yellow dragon, with an orange top of the head. His body almost reminded me of a giant caterpillar, but his face reminded me of an excited puppy, his yellow eyes glinting with happiness while everyone else was so serious."They are the Masters." Zane said as be caught my curious gaze watching the dragons. "The female is Mistress Glamour, the soul dragon, the black one is Master Void, the dark dragon and the yellow one is Master Earok, the fire and earth dragon." Zane explained.
"Why are they the masters? What are they the masters of?" I asked curiously as we stopped and waited around ten metres from the Masters and General, waiting for them to finish their important looking conversation.
"Well, these are the types of dragons there are. Fire, water, earth, air, forest, ice and sand dragons. But some dragons are born with rare abilities which automatically makes them destined for a high rank. Like say Mistress Glamour. She is the first soul dragon to have existed here for centuries, and it has been even longer since a dark dragon was born. And Earok was born with two elements; fire and earth, when most are born with one.
And what are they the masters of? Well, the General is in charge of everything, but that can often be a tough burden, so masters are in charge of one thing, though the General is has a higher power, he can't always put in the attention needed to everything, so there are three Masters that help him. A Master for the army, hunting and any fighting things, which is Void. A Master of the Healers, hatchlings and young dragons which is Glamour. And a Master for the common folk, which is Earok." Zane explained.
"So what are soul and dark dragons? I guess that fire dragons breathe out fire and water dragons breathe out water and all, but how do you breathe out souls..?" I asked in confusion. Zane chuckle, "Well, all dragons are born breathing only fire, even if they are say an ice dragon, like take Nevis for example. He needed to train for years before he could breathe out ice. As for fire dragons, after training their fire just gets stronger. But dragons like Glamour, who are soul dragons, they don't breathe out souls or something, that simply means that they can read your emotions, feelings and with enough practice can change your emotions, read your thoughts and even control you." Zane said and I shivered at the thought. Suddenly Mistress Glamour was more intimating than Master Void.
Zane chuckled again, "Don't worry, even if Glamour does know how to control people, it is not aloud to be done on your own kin or for no worthy purpose." Zane said and I sighed. "Wow, so dragons actually have way more laws than I thought. Funny how just last year I thought dragons were more wild and lawless than a stampede of angry bulls." I chuckled, then smiled. So much had changed."Well anyways, what about dark dragons?" I asked and Zane nodded.
"Well, dark dragons are naturally very mysterious as I have heard. Besides Void no one here has ever met a dark dragon, but there are the stories, but everyone knows the stories of the powers of dark dragons doesn't tell you everything, because as I said, dark dragons are very mysterious and secretive and so they wouldn't share everything." Zane said, and I nodded for him to continue."Well, from what I know they have the power to make people feel fear, anger or grief for no reason. They also breathe out shadows which engulf and suffocate you. They can also breathe out smoke, and can heat up their scales to such a high temperature it can melt your skin off. I'm not sure which of these things are true, and how much more there are, but this is what I have heard." Zane said and a chill ran down my spine. Void was definitely more intimating than Glamour.
Finally, the General spotted us and began walking towards us.
"You, human." General Theaven said in a serious tone as he looked right past me, his eyes landing on Axel.
"Me?" Axel asked. "Yes you. We need to talk."April Bluebird/BlueWhiskers1.
