My heart started Racing. I look at Jamie and Jacob, Trying to compose a plan.

KNOCK KNOCK!

"Hello? Is everything alright?" I quickly Shoved the things on my bed under the bed, and tossed the bags behind it. I then attempted to compose myself, and let my exhaustion play with my face. I looked at Jamie one last time, Flipped off the lights, and opened the door. Sure enough, Mr. Wilson was standing there, a concerned expression painting his features. I looked at him with bleary eyes. He looked down at me.

"What's going on in there?" He asked. "Jacob 'ad a nightmare, and Jamie 'is help'n me calm 'im down." I mumbled, Letting My tiredness slur my speech. I rubbed my eye, to emphasize our tiredness. Mr. Wilson nodded. He too was looking exhausted. "N'kay. Glad to hear your help'n him. Good night." I nodded and closed the door. Adrenaline Pushed away any remaining tiredness. I tossed my things back on the bed and we took up our burdens once more.

At the last moment, I realized that My locket was still on the dresser. I snatched it, and clipped it around my neck, tucking it into my shirt. Jamie opened the window, and we climbed out as quietly as we could.

I slowly closed the window, and we started toward the woods behind the building. I tread carefully on the soft grass, my whole body tense. fearful that at any moment, someone would see us, and give us away. I pulled my hood over my head, and we ducked into the woods.

The dew on the grass soaked into the souls of my shoes. The stars glittered above our heads through the leaves of the trees. Tall grass and brambles snagged at our jeans, and left their seeds on anything they touched. fear gripped my soul, and seemed to tug at me. It became harder, and harder to press forward. I did not know if it was more the desire to return to the safety of the orphanage, or fatigue for the loss of sleep.

"How ya hold'n up there Jay?" Jamie yawned. Jacob didn't answer. I was holding his hand to guide him. "Jacob?" I asked. "Hm?" Jacob sounded tired. "How are you doing?" I asked. "Mhm." He answered. Jamie and I shared a look. "I think we need to find somewhere to bed down for the night." I said, my own fatigue weighing on my limbs.

We continued our advance though the woods, now searching for a shelter. I yawned. My legs felt like rubber, and my throat was dry. Step, step, stagger, step, step, stumble. We had walked about a mile from the orphanage. I felt like I could collapse at any moment. Then, we started to see lights. City lights to be exact. And I knew, if vaguely, Where we were.

Some of the doubt fled my mind, and my legs felt a little less tired. We can do this. I scanned our surroundings. Around us were several houses, and fences that blocked off back yards. We climbed a fence. It was a metal wire fence, and was easy to climb. I stumbled off on the other side. Jamie helped Jacob over, then joined us on our side.

The yard was dark, and ominous. My soul pounded in my head telling me this was wrong. That we should have stayed. My foggy, tired mind ached with panic, and my shoulders tensed. We tiptoed along the edge of the yard, keeping to the shadows. I shivered. We scaled the other fence, then slipped across the front yard, to the street. The cobbles were hard and rough, a stark contrast to the soft earth and cool grass prior in our journey. "We... we're in town now." Jacob mumbled sleepily. "Yes..." I muttered.

We walked another block. There weren't any other people wandering around the streets at this hour. My legs felt like led, and my spine felt stiff. My feet felt like I was walking on sand paper. I scanned the houses and allies we passed, looking for somewhere we might be able to stay. After some time, I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Hey Emily? How about there?" Jamie pointed to an ally a few feet in front of us.

Most stories describe allies to be stinky, dirty, and wet, with slime and worms and spray paint ornamenting the walls. But this ally was just a space between two buildings, with a brick wall at the back that most likely framed a back yard. Ivy hung thickly from the top of the wall, which, after further inspection, had a ledge that stretched about two feet away from the wall itself. There was a small space between the wall, and the Ivy, which acted as an opposite wall. It didn't hang all the way to the floor of the ally, but that was a bit much to ask for anyway. The floor was a bit damp, and had a thin layer of dusty dirt on it, but all in all, it was better than I was expecting.

I didn't need a feather mattress to fall asleep at this point.
