The crack of dawn. It was so much more beautiful than I had remembered. My eyes fluttered open to see the watery light wash through the ivy. I peeked under the curtain to get a better look. What I didn't expect to see was a stranger walking out of the ally. Did they seen us? They wore long pants, and a jacket, I could tell that much, but as soon as they left, I found myself wondering if I had really seen anyone.
I turned my gaze to the place where the boys had collapsed near the back. They were still fast asleep. Cold air trickled into the tiny shelter. It made my skin tingle. A car rolled passed the ally. I pulled the hood of my jacket over my head, and crawled out of the shelter.
Walking as quietly as I could, I tiptoed to the end of the ally, and peeked around the corner. The stranger was a few yards in front of me. Their advance was quick, and near silent, but faltered when I rounded the corner. I ducked back as they turned their head. When I peaked back, they were rounding the other corner.
I padded quickly after them, curiosity fluttering in my soul. I was unimpressed with my lack of skill compared to them, but also curious about their reason for being so discrete. I wondered if them being there was just a coincidence, or a reason behind my strange dream. Questions swam in my mind.
Reaching the other corner, I glanced cautiously at the stranger. They were standing still, back tuned to me, hands pocketed. "Who's there?" They asked. Their voice was soft, and their shoulders ridged. I stayed silent. They turned their head slowly, and there was no where to hide.
I froze. The stranger's gaze landed on me. They also froze. "What'd you want?" they asked. I hesitated. "Why... Why were you in the ally?" I tried. "Nun... of your business, now get lost." They replied uncertainly. I stood my ground. They took a step back, then turned around. They walked away, shoulders hunched.
I watched them go, weighing my options. After a moment of hesitation, I decided the boys were probably still sleeping, and continued after the stranger as quietly as possible. After we walked a few more yards, they stopped again. "Did I stutter? Get lost." "Tell me why you were in the ally." I said defiantly. "Why?" They asked. I searched for a reason. After a moment of silence, They spoke. "I...I was just passing through." They said hastily. "What?" I asked. "The ally. Now just... leave me alone. Please." I sighed. "Okay, thanks." I turned around and walked away. After a few steps, I looked back. They were still standing there, watching me. I'm going, I'm going.
I continued the way I came until I was back at the ally. My face felt hot, but I wasn't entirely sure why. I ducked back into the small shelter. "Herk!" Jamie jumped, a hand grasping at his shirt. His breath was quick and loud.
"You,.... startled me." He said, voice high, and soft. "Sorry, I thought you were still asleep." I apologized. "I just... I just woke up, and you were... gone. Where were you?" "I... Uh, went for a walk." I half lied. "Okay,... Hope you had fun."
Jacob stirred. "Who's there?" He asked. "Just Emily, and Me." Jamie told him. "Where are- Oh. Yea." He sat up slowly. "Hey Emily?..." Jamie asked. "Yea?" I turned to him. He had a worried expression painted on his face. "I... Uh... need to... use the little boy's room." He said. "Me too,..." Jacob added. I face palmed.
