"Neji, I'm gonna go buy his food! Can you stay here and watch him for me?"

"Hm? Oh, of course."

He'd been in the corner of your bedroom all day, watching you give all your love and attention to the stupid bird he'd bought you for your stupid birthday.

'No, her birthday's not stupid. But that bird is.'

You had talked about wanting a parrot for months now, but never knew which one to get, so when Neji had the ingenious idea of buying you one himself, he'd assumed you'd be all over him. Instead, you'd focused on the dumb animal in that dumb cage and pretty much ignored him for most of your birthday.

He gave you a rather forced, tight lipped smile as you left, immediately going over to the cage. He sat where you were a few moments prior, glaring at the gift he got for you.

"What's so great about you anyway? All you can do is repeat what you hear her say! I'm much better than that. Plus, the only reason you had the opportunity to be her pet was because of me. You should be thanking me, since I got you for her. And how does she find you more interesting than me? She's ignored me all day because of you, just over here whispering secret stuff to you. What's she been saying? What? Tell me!-"

His rant went on for a while, and he just whisper shouted at the poor animal for well over ten minutes. He'd never been this jealous before, and it was all because of a gift he bought you himself.

"And-and now she's left me all alone to go buy you food! We were supposed to spend today together, but all she's been doing is paying attention to you! And I've just been left forgotten in the corner while you've been getting all the love! I wa-"

"Neji?! What are you doing with him?"

He whipped around, rising to his feet. Regaining his calm composure, he smiled forcibly at you.

"Just talking, I guess."

"I could hear you yelling from outside."

You giggled when he blushed, wrapping your arms around him. He returned the embrace, savouring the moment.

"It's okay, Neji. I was just excited about the parrot, sorry for not thinking about how you might feel."

"It's nothing, don't apologise. I was just jealous of a parrot, I think."

You giggled again, holding him closer. He laughed lightly too, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek.

"I love Neji! So much!"

Your jaw dropped, and you jumped away from your boyfriend. Neither of you had spoken, and someone was still repeating " I love Neji! So much!".

It was your parrot.

"Is that what you've been saying to him? That you love me?"

"Well, yeah. Of course I was."

He smiled again, a real smile this time, and brought his lips to yours.

"I love you too, y/n. Happy birthday."
