"If you need anything, my door's always open. Welcome to Mulberry High!"
(Name) smiled at the school counselor as she left the office. "Thank you again," she said for the final time.
Mulberry High. It was (Name)'s first day at her new school since her family moved to town. She knew she would miss her life in Greenville, but this was a chance at a new start.
Biting her lip out of nervous anticipation, (Name) looked down at her schedule. It had all of her classes and their room numbers listed. Although the school wasn't very big and (Name) had already been given a tour, the halls were a lot more crowded now. It made everything look even more unfamiliar. It's ok, (Name) told herself. I'll be fine. And if I need help, there are plenty of people around I could ask.
It took (Name) some time to scout out her classes, but once she had she felt more reassured. Class was soon to start, marked by the thinning population of the hallway. This made it easier for (Name) to find her locker. She sighed softly as she flipped her schedule over. On the other side her locker number and combination were written. As she had always struggled with combination locks, (Name) dreaded the trial and error that was about to come.
(Name) tried three times to get the locker open, but it proved to be more of a struggle than she originally thought. With a frustrated groan, the girl dropped her face into the hands. I'll never make it to class at this rate. Just then, there was a voice beside her. "Do you need help with that?" Surprised, (Name) turned to see another girl. The first thing she noticed was her curly brown hair and the amused gleam in her dark eyes. "Uh, yes. Please." (Name) took a step over, allowing the other girl access to her locker. Taking the paper, the brunette gave it a glance before putting the combination in. Without any difficulty, it opened for the shorter girl.
(Name) gaped at her in amazement. "Woah, you made that look so easy! Thank you so much!" The other girl shrugged lightly with a grin. "You're welcome. Glad I was able to help." There was a pause as (Name) grabbed what she needed for her first couple of classes and put her bag in the locker. "You're new, right?" (Name) nodded as she closed the locker door. "Yeah. This is my first day. I'm (Name)." The slightly shorter girl smiled. "Nice to meet you. I'm Norma. If you need more help settling in, feel free to come to me."
(Name) nodded with a smile. Have I made my first friend already? She wondered. Then the bell for the first class rang. "Oh shit!" Norma was left laughing as she ran off to her first class.
