"Where are you going so early young lady?" asked Opal as Alexa was walking out the door.
"Just Rileys' house. Where's dad?"
"He had to go to work early. He is working on something big. I'll see you after school pumpkin, don't be late."
Alexa walked out the door, excited but also nervous at the same time. Nervousited.
BEEP!
Alexa picked up her phone. She had gotten a text from Kate, one of her two best friends from California.
Howdy city girl, what's it like up in the big apple? Can you call?
Alexa was shocked, Kate never wanted to call when she lived in California. But she couldn't cancel on Riley. So she texted Kate this:
Sorry girly, I'm going to my friend Riley's house. We can talk later.
Alexa? Are you replacing me with this new girl? I don't wanna lose you any more than I already have, I miss you:(
I miss you too Kate. I hope Taylor is doing well. And my new friends will never replace you. Miss you, bye.
When Alexa got into Rileys' apartment, she ran directly to her door to see Farkle and Maya standing there.
"Hey Alexa." said Maya "Actually, never mind. Alexa is too fancy for you. How does Lex sound?"
"It's... good with me."
"That sounds like a superhero!" said Farkle "Lex Peters: criminal mastermind."
"Yeah." said Alexa "I'm not that much of a hero though."
"I'm not a hero either. But with a name like Lex, you can pretend you are." said Maya.
Maya finally opened the door. Maya and Farkle walked in, Alexa slowly behind. Sitting right there, eating breakfast with the family, was Mr. Matthews. Alexa obviously knew that Riley and Mr. Matthews were related, but she hadn't fully comprehended ever that teachers have a life outside of teaching. Alexa kept blinking to make sure she wasn't imagining all of this.
"Maya. Oatmeal." said Riley's mom.
"No thank you, Mrs. Matthews." said Maya, politer than Alexa had ever seen her.
"I wasn't asking." said Mrs. Matthews. "Farkle you too."
"Thank you." he said, shutting the door "But my mom already made me..."
Alexa tuned out of Farkle's random breakfast items list. That was until Mr. Matthews said:
"Welcome Alexa. Have a seat and Topanga will get you some oatmeal. "
"Thank you sir." said Alexa.
"You are way more proper than I thought you were." said Maya, laughing.
"Thanks?!" Alexa replied, confused.
Once given her food, Alexa tuned out again. She had never been good at paying attention, wherever she was. Mr. Matthews turned on the tv.
Out of nowhere, Riley's little brother, Auggie stood up from his seat and shut it off.
"HEY!" yelled Farkle, Riley, and Maya in unison.
"I'm too old for Mr. Googley!" he exclaimed, walking away.
Alexa didn't know this kid, but seeing everyone else's reactions, she knew something was going to go down.
"What?!" yelled Topanga, standing up.
"Auggie! Mr. Googley is your best friend!" Mr. Matthews exclaimed.
"Auggie, I'm your foogley-googley best friend!" said Topanga in a Mr. Googley voice, to no avail.
"Can I tell you a secret?" asked Auggie.
"You can tell me anything." said 'Mr. Googley'
"I have a new best friend now."
"Oh really, who would that be?"
"I don't wanna tell you who she is."
"She!?" everyone but Auggie yelled in unison.
"I said too much!" Auggie muttered.
"How about you tell Mr. Googley all about your new best friend and none of us will listen." said Topanga.
Everyone turned away, pretending not to hear anything.
"I'm done with you now, bye!" said Auggie, slamming Mr. Googley down.
"They grow up so fast." Riley said to Alexa and Maya.
~~~~~~~~~
Alexa walked slowly and silently in the school hallways, until she saw Maya covering Rileys' eyes.
Alexa looked into the next classroom. She gasped at what she saw. Lucas was with another girl, and they looked very romantic with each other. She already knew her chances with this guy were up, but she needed to act like she wasn't sad, because she knew Riley would be. Alexa walked towards Maya, who was standing outside of the classroom. She was obviously trying to protect Riley from seeing Lucas with the girl.
"That's not the game." said Maya, uncovering Rileys' eyes.
"What is the game?" asked Riley.
"Protect the plant from the bulldozer." said Maya.
"In the pink sweater." Alexa added.
"Oh Alexa, bulldozers don't wear pink." said Riley, finally looking into the next room.
"Oh." Riley said, walking away.
"You ok?" Alexa asked as Riley slammed herself against one of the lockers.
"Yeah." said Riley, slowly falling to the ground, with Maya and Alexa joining her.
"Look what the bulldozer did to you." said Maya.
"There are other girls in this world." Riley began.
"There are." Alexa added.
"And other girls, like Missy Bradford, going to talk to Lucas." Riley said.
"They are." Alexa added.
"I don't like that." Riley said.
"I know." said Maya.
"I wish the world was just us." said Riley.
"Then it is." said Maya.
~~~~~~
"Sneak attack." began Mr. Matthews "December 7th 1941."
"A date that will..." Alexa kinda tuned Farkle out there.
"Date! They're going on a date!" said Riley.
Alexa got her book out again. Maybe she could finish Peter Pan today.
"Another sunny day in paradise." began Mr. Matthews again "With the sneak attack that changed everything. People who viewed themselves as safe, no longer had any security at all."
Riley suddenly burst through the door and started her petty argument with Missy.
"How bad do you think this is gonna be?" Maya asked Farkle and Alexa.
Alexa tried to get back to the book, but their argument was almost impossible to avoid. By the time Alexa had turned around again, she saw Riley with her finger basically inside Lucas' nose, for some reason, she really didn't care that much about this argument.
"Farkle!" yelled Riley in desperation.
"What Riley." he said "I don't think I could do that even if I tried." And the same unfortunate events of Riley played out.
"The bombing at Pearl Harbor was the beginning of a world at war. And nothing would ever be the same."
And that's where the middle school war began.
