I gaped at him. Toby was asking me out? At least, I thought he was. He’d spoken very quickly. “Um. Did you just ask me to go to the movies on Saturday? Because that’s what I thought you said…” I asked, watching his face redden as I repeated what he’d said back to him.

Toby groaned. “My friends are all convinced that I’m in love with you and that I needed to take you out on a date to prove it to myself and I was obviously gonna refuse to do that because you’re my best mate, and that would be weird. But then the idiots tricked me into betting them that I would and it’s worth quite a lot of money so would you mind?” He finally looked up at me, a hopeful expression in his hazel eyes.

“Oh. Okay. That makes sense. Um. Sure, I’ll go. Should they know that I know it’s a bet, or must I keep it a secret?” I replied, deciding that there wasn’t exactly any harm in doing that. I mean, we probably would have ended up hanging out anyway, so the least I could do would be to force him to buy me popcorn.

“Great! And yes, that would make life easier for me. And less expensive, I don’t want to have to take you out again and pay for you twice!” Toby teased, somehow knowing exactly what I had just been thinking.

I nodded, grinning up at him. “It’s a deal then. Aw man, we were supposed to meet the guys over five minutes ago! KEIRA WE GOTTA GOOOO!” I yelled, freaking out and giving Toby a brief goodbye hug then sprinting towards the exit, grabbing Keira just seconds after she removed the headphones attached to the test CD player.

“What are you doing Talia?” Keira screeched, as we raced around the corner, aiming for the last available booth seat at the food-court, opposite the McDonalds.

I could see the boys making a beeline for it, and I knew that if we didn’t manage to make it there first, they’d never stop complaining about us being late. Luckily, they hadn’t seen us yet, plus they were concentrating on carrying their heavily laden trays as opposed to watching out for screaming teenage girls racing to their destination.

"C'mon woman, we need to beat them there!" I whisper-screamed at Keira, trying to avoid catching the boys' attention. We were less than 10 metres away, Keira only a few steps behind me. I had one arm outstretched, dodging tables and bowling over stupid people who didn't get out of my way in time.

I was literally two steps away from the booth when Drew looked up from his tray. He'd probably heard all the people yelling at us and scrambling to get out of the road. But once he glanced briefly up, and then again for longer, as if confirming what he'd seen - his little sister and her dorky best friend racing to make it to the booth, faces contorted in determination  - he grinned. And stuck his foot out.
