Here is a short story to go along with this music video of Roundtable Rival by Lindsey Stirling. No credit to me for the music or content of the video, it is completely hers. This following story is just a little something I wrote to try and describe the happenings in the video. You can read first, then watch, or vice versa. If you're a fast enough reader, you can try to read the story while listening to the music! I've tried it myself and if you time it right it works out. Well, hope you all had a very merry Christmas and a happy new year and enjoy!
"A shot of brandy!" A man yelled. Sighing, I wiped the counter down with a rag before grabbing a shot glass. Looking over, I saw Miranda serving someone at a table across the room. Sighing, I thought of our job, small, under appreciated, and,...
VRUM!!!! I heard commotion and electric guitar outside. I glanced out a window before leaning over to the end of the counter. I lifted up the top and lifted out a strange looking instrument. It was a violin frame with parts of trumpets attached to it. It was a crude object, but I could play up a storm with it. Motioning to Miranda and Jackie, we hurried past the panicking drunks to the door.
The first thing I saw was a man in a black, sleeveless vest with an electric guitar. I could feel the power in every wave of sound coming from every chord he played, and the sheriff was no match for him. He had a handsome face, too handsome, until he smiled a crooked smile and I easily recognized him. The only man on a wanted poster that had hung all over the town for as long as I could remember, the man who's face was dotted with darts in the saloon, Durango Black.
The song he had started playing was familiar, all to familiar. I instantly recognized it from a song I could play on my violin, and what me, Miranda, and Jackie had worked out a routine for. I looked back at them, seeing them realize what song he was playing. They met my gaze and I gave them a look that I never thought I would ever give them. We had wanted to be discovered for our talents, and this was the perfect chance. I turned around to see him pointing towards the town bank and I immediately ran out, coming in between him and his goal. Miranda and Jackie started walking out of the saloon and towards us, realizing what my intent was.
Durango gave me a mischievous grin and strummed the beginning chords to the exact song I had been practicing ever since I had gotten my instrument constructed. I set the bow to the odd instrument and started to play. The many practices I had done paid off, and my bow flew up and down the strings, my body automatically reacting to the music without me having to think about steps at all. I looked at Durango's face. He obviously noticed that I had talent, and he started playing the next chords, louder and stronger. But I fought back with the routine me and the girls could perform in our sleep. All of Durango's efforts were deflecting and couldn't penetrate me, and I could tell from the look on his face he wasn't too happy. The frustrated look continued to twist into anger as the verse built up to the chorus. I played along, sensing Miranda and Jackie getting into position behind me.
Durango strummed one last powerful chord at us as we went into the chorus, expecting us to finally fail. However, as soon as my violin started on the chorus, my body sprang into action, along with Miranda and Jackie behind me. Durango and his henchmen stumbled back, obviously surprised. Every note I hit sent them back stumbling, until they finally had to climb onto their horses and ride quickly out of town. I looked back to see Miranda and Jackie's grinning faces, a smile soon taking over my own.
**************
I laughed as I talked with Miranda and Jackie about what had happened in the short week ever since our showdown with Durango. We still worked at the saloon, but people respected us more and asked us to perform often. I man came up to us and asked me to play, so I grabbed my violin and bow. But before I could even set the bow to the strings, I heard a familiar noise outside. Electric guitar.
People looked at me expectantly, and I nodded to Miranda and Jackie, who followed me to the door. Who I saw was exactly who I thought I would see, but what he was on I could've never expected. I stood with my violin at the ready, with the girls getting into position behind me. Durango jumped down from a wagon he had in the middle of the street with a large covered thing in it. He held his guitar and gave me a crooked smile.
"I believe we have a song to finish, Miss Stirling." He gave me a sneer as he and his men put on some headphones and whipped off the sheet covering their cargo. It was a set of giant speakers.
My bow dropped from its ready position as I realized what he planned to do. His hand swiped across his guitar strings and waves of powerful amplified guitar hit me and the girls, knocking us against the wall and my violin out of my hand. The music was too strong and I couldn't pull any part of my body away from the wall, nor could Miranda or Jackie.
After the chord was over, Durango walked away, throwing down the headphones. His henchmen followed, one of them taking my violin, leaving the speakers on. I was slowly able to pull my googles over my eyes, shielding my vision from the sound. I struggled to push against the music and I was finally able to reach the remote. The sudden stop made me fall to the ground in exhaustion, but I quickly got up, grabbing the headphones and gesturing to some of the townspeople to take the wagon over. I rushed over to the bank and pointed my bow at the rugged man there holding my instrument. He sneered at me and held out his arms in a 'come at me' way. Miranda sneaked up behind him and snatched the instrument from his hands and threw it into the air. It landed right in my outstretched hand, and as the speakers rolled up behind me and the girls took the men's headphones, I started to play. Durango's henchmen started towards us, but me and the Miranda and Jackie danced nimbly between them, skipping neatly out of reach.
Durango appeared at the doorway, sacks in his hands, and looked up at the scene before him. He dropped the bags and ran towards his henchmen, looking between his unarmed men and his own weapon, this time pointing at him. An old man pushed a button on the remote and the speaker turned on, blasting my violin music. Durango and his men couldn't handle the amplified violin and immediately fell down, struggling to get back up. I grinned, happy they got a taste of their own medicine. The sheriff and his deputy soon came and arrested them, taking away Durango, sneering. Turning off the large speakers, I wandered over to their horses, well, now they weren't anybody's. I climbed up on one and gestured to Miranda and Jackie, who soon followed suit. As we rode off into the sunset, I could still hear my violin music, echoing in my head, reminding me of my victory and greatest asset.
