Chapter Fifty: The Last Night
'You have until tomorrow to accept my deal. If you do accept, come alone, you will work for me for the next three months. No one must know where you've gone...you can give whatever excuse you like but you will not tell them you are here. At the end of it, I will give back the memories of Alexandra that you lost.'
Mulling the Oracle's words over and over again, Nicholas knew there was no easy way to do this. He had to do it, if it meant remembering the girl he loved. No doubt if she found out what he was planning, Alexandra wouldn't be pleased. How was he supposed to leave her without telling her where he was going and for how long?
Walking down the hall towards his room, he noticed light coming from under the crack. Someone was inside. Standing outside for a moment, he wiped his face of emotion.
Opening the door, Nicholas found Alexandra sitting on the bed, looking at something. She turned to smile at him.
"I was wondering when you would come home!" She said, cheerily.
"Have you been waiting long, Lex?" He asked, mustering up a smile.
"Not that long. About 10 minutes maybe."
Pulling off his uniform jacket, he started to unbutton his shirt, trying to relax himself, as the decision he had to make loomed ahead of him. Walking over to the bed, he sat behind her, peering over Alexandra's shoulder to see what she was busy with.
"What are you looking at?" He asked.
"These. Mark found a way to connect the phones from the Isle to a computer and print them." Showing him a small pile of pictures. They were shots of the two of them, some with Mark, from their recent trips to find his memories.
Holding up a shot of himself and Alexandra, where he was holding her by the waist, Nicholas felt the heaviness in his heart become more pronounced.
"You look beautiful in them, Lex." He mumbled, as he handed the picture back to the Queen.
"As do you!" She smiled. Normally, he would have laughed, but now he couldn't, he could barely form a grin at her words.
Reaching out to her, Nicholas gently cupped her cheek, turning Alexandra to face him. He knew he couldn't wait any longer.
"I love you, Lex..."
"I know, I love you too, Nick." Alexandra said sweetly.
"I love you so much...I want you to remember that." Unable to say what he really meant, Nicholas felt a lump forming in his throat.
"Why are you talking like that, Nick?" Alexandra asked, confusion written in her eyes, as she moved to sit beside him. "What's wrong?"
Knowing he couldn't prolong the inevitable, Nicholas looked away.
"I'm leaving for a little while." He said, unable to say it any better.
"What? Where are you going?"
When he didn't say anything, he saw the panicked look on her face.
"Is it because of the other day? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you...I didn't know you wouldn't be able to remember the memories once I showed them to you. I thought the Oracle had meant that you wouldn't recall your own memories of me." She said, sounding as upset as he felt.
"No, it's not because of that." He told her, honestly. "I'm glad you showed me them. Even though I can't remember them, I still feel this warmth that I got to see them. I got to see us."
"Then why are you leaving?" Alexandra asked, hurt.
"There's just something I need to do." He told her.
