Katara POV
As we walked across the bridge leading into town we saw large amounts of fireworks shoot into the sky, beautiful colors of red gold blue and green filled the sky and rained down like falling stars. Beautiful red lanterns were strung from building to building and beautiful displays of stalls full of things to buy and people dancing around dressed as fancy dragons filled the street's.
As I looked around I noticed that everyone was wearing red and had wild and crazy masks covering their faces, even children running around pretending to fight had masks on. Suddenly I felt very out of place and everywhere I looked I expected to see zuko and his men trying to capture us. However zuko and his crew were definitely not here. They couldn't be, I was just paranoid.
The dragon ran in front of us and a little girl ran past with a sparkler as her laughter filled the air. I turned to the boys and spoke softly, "I think we need some new disguises.." Sokka answered me sarcastically as always, "where are we going to get masks like that?" Before I could answer a nearby vendor yelled at us loudly.
"Get your genuine fire festival masks right here!" He waved his arms beckoning us to come over. So we ran over as sokka replied, " that was surprisingly easy!" We all picked up a mask and I glanced over at them. Aang was wearing a sad mask and sokka had a happy mask.. that's definitely not right! I quickly switched the masks as they stood there looking silly.
We walked towards the center of town until a smell hit our nose. Aang beat me to it, "hey! There's some food!" Sokka took of running "finally!! What do you have?" The vendor smiled and replied. "Flaming fire flakes, best in town!" He held out a small pouch to sokka and his mouth watered as he took them and paid. "I'll take them!" He started shoveling them into his mouth before he started screaming and fanning his mouth. "HOT!!! HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes under the mask, "flaming fire flakes; Hot? What do you know!" He was rubbing the flakes off his tongue when aang pointed and said "hey look at this!" Again I rolled my eyes, these boys have the attention span of a snake-rat. We walked over to where aang was headed, there was a stage with a puppet show and children watching with their parents close by.
The puppet show was of the firelord burning an earth bender to a crisp, these sick minded people were clapping and the kids where cheering! I instantly felt bad for these kids, they were taught to think that hurting people is a good thing. This world is truly evil, I hope that after the war things change and become peaceful again however it may be too late to save this generation.
I walked away in disgust, I found a stall selling fruit and vegetables so I stocked up for the trip. Next I found some meat and fish, after buying everything we were nearly out of money. I looked over to sokka and aang, they were looking at some kind of souvenir stand. I decided to leave them be, let them spend their own money. They always waste their money on stupid stuff, i'm buying practical things that we need. They always do stuff like this, wasting money on little trinkets and doodads that we don't need! I never get to buy anything for myself... I looked down at the money in my hand. It may not be much money but maybe I should finally buy myself something.. it couldn't hurt. All I know is when we run out of money and the boys are hungry i'll tell them they should've bought food instead of wasting it all the time! They don't even help with chores! I'm practically there mother!
I thought about how I'm always the one gathering wood, building a fire, cooking dinner, cleaning the campsite, washing the clothes, sewing, and even taking down the tents when they are too tired! They just play around, fish, gather nuts and berries. If they only knew how easy they have it... I deserve to treat myself for once!
I found a cart that sells jewelry, the display was beautiful! I've always been so entranced by jewelry, how people can turn the simple materials into such intricate pieces of craftsmanship. I glanced over the assortment until my eyes caught something unexpected. A necklace of an oni hannya mask. It looked so similar to blues mask that I had to have it. I bought it and decided to get blue a necklace of a moon. That way we would both have a reminder of each other, only problem is the only moon necklace they have is a dragon.. that's fire nation for you... but still... it's a moon..
