It's nerve-wracking, being sorted into a house in front of the entire study body.
Blaine was the first called— his last name was Anderson. He was shaky, struggling to keep his balance on the three-legged stool. He almost fell over as he sat down, eliciting a few chuckles from other students.
The hat didn't think before declaring him a Hufflepuff, and there was polite cheering from all the tables.
He was worried about not knowing where to sit, but a kind-looking boy at the Hufflepuff table immediately waved him over, patting the seat beside him.
"Welcome to the house," he said, smiling. "I'm David. And I assure you, nobody will remember that. You're definitely not the first nervous first-year we've had."
Blaine smiled back, feeling relieved.
Soon after a 'Cohen-Chang, Tina' joined them, getting a thumbs-up from a boy at the Gryffindor table.
Blaine was distracted as he looked at the boy, almost missing as the boy on the train's name was called.
"Montgomery, Wesley."
Wes sat down on the stool, eyes scanning the tables. He caught Blaine's eye, and Blaine gave him a reassuring smile.
The hat was set on him, and it hardly thought. "RAVENCLAW!"
After a while, another boy was called that made the hall go absolutely silent, which hadn't happened before. "Harris, Thaddeus."
Ryan, at the Gryffindor table, leaned over to his friend Kurt, whom had given Tina the thumbs-up. "Ooh, that's my brother Thad. We've kinda got a variety of three houses, it'll be interesting to see what he gets."
"What house don't you have?" Kurt asked, but the hat was set on Thad's head, and they both turned their attention back to him.
There was a pause. The longest pause there'd been so far. Ryan was biting his lip.
"SLYTHERIN!"
The hall went dead silent. Everyone was quiet— something was wrong.
"We haven't had a Slytherin," Ryan whispered. Thad looked so scared.
But a student at the Ravenclaw table started clapping in the silence. Everyone looked over at them, but they didn't stop. "What? C'mon, clap for the kid. Nothing wrong with Slytherin."
"The Harris's haven't had a Slytherin!" someone hissed at them, as if they didn't know.
"Well, good for him. Breaking traditions."
The hall eventually joined in clapping, and Thad walked to the Slytherin table, a boy soundlessly moving to make room for him.
The Sorting continued, though there wasn't anything as big as that.
There wasn't a speech, only food appearing on the plates.
"I'm glad you're in Ravenclaw," Nick said to Wes. "Now you have me to help you."
"I am too," Wes responded.
"This is Aaron—" Nick pointed to the student who had stuck up for Thad— "and Jack—" he pointed to the boy on his other side, who looked much more like him. "Aaron and Jack, this is Wes, I met him on the train."
Nick and Jack both had short hair, though Jack's was a bit messier and longer. Their eyes were dark brown, neither of them had freckles— it was obvious they were brothers.
Aaron, on the other hand, had very long, very dark brown hair that was up in a messy bun. Their hair had streaks of white in it, that matched the much paler patches on their skin. Their eyes were the same as their brothers', though their left eye had white eyelashes.
"It's nice to meet you," Wes said politely, stopping himself from staring. Aaron was very pretty. "It was awesome, how you stuck up for that guy."
Aaron smiled. "Glad you think so. Honestly, I think we should all be long past the Slytherin hate. People aren't good or bad because of their house, y'know? I mean, Hilter was one of the worst people to exist and he's not even magic."
Wes nodded. "Yeah. I'm not really familiar to all this, I didn't really have any idea what was going on. I found out I was a wizard on the train ride here, I only got the time and place before my dad took the letter from me and ripped it up."
"But you..." Jack looked at his robe, confused.
"I lent it to him," Nick filled in.
"Oh. I was very confused for a minute there."
