After he ate, Kurt was talking a walk outside when he thought he heard a voice.

They sound really upset, he said to himself. Figuring it was a frustrated or homesick first-year, he headed towards the noise.

When he found it, he saw a boy standing with his arms out, yelling across the grounds.

But that wasn't all he noticed. Swirling around his feet, like a tornado, was something like black mist.

"Am I just a failure, is that it?!"

The more he shouted, he more worked up he got, the faster and bigger the tornado became. It was becoming harder and harder to see him.

"Am I just so freakin' worthless that I can't use my own magic?!"

"Hello?" Kurt called out, trying to get his attention.

"I— UGH!"

The boy collapsed, and the black mist shot out on all sides of him. It was so fast, Kurt hardly saw it— he certainly couldn't get out of the way.

It shot right at him, blowing him back several feet and slamming him into a tree. His world went dark.

"—happened to him?"

"I don't know, I went looking for him and found him crumpled and bleeding by the roots of a tree that had fallen over. He was completely unconscious."

"Do you think he'll remember?"

"He'd better, because I'm going to kick the ass of whoever hurt him."

Kurt blinked his eyes open, and the voices went silent. His entire body ached.

"Kurt?" Elliot's voice asked him, much softer than it was before.

He carefully pushed himself up, seeing Ryan and Elliot by the side of his bed, looking worried. He was in the hospital wing.

"Ouch," he said weakly, making Ryan chuckle half-heartedly.

"What happened?" Ryan asked.

Kurt gently rolled his shoulders, stretching his limbs. "There's... There's an obscurial here. At Hogwarts."

Both their eyes went wide. "What?" Elliot asked.

"I was taking a walk, I heard someone yelling. Their obscurus, it was swirling around their feet. They were standing, yelling about how they were a failure and couldn't use their magic. Then they just cried out and the obscurus shot out around them, it hit me and slammed me against something."

"It was a tree," Elliot told him faintly. "And it was knocked over when I found you."

"You need to tell McGonagall."

Kurt nodded. "I'm going to. But right now, everything hurts."

"Do you want me to get her?" Ryan asked. "Because the sooner she knows, the better."

"How about you go to her office, and tell her I saw one and that I'll go talk to her about it as soon as I'm better?" he suggested.

"That works, I can do that."

Ryan left, and Elliot sat on the side of Kurt's bed. "Did you get a good look at them?"

He started to shake his head, but stopped, wincing. "No, I didn't. I think it was a boy, and their hair was dark, but that's about it. I didn't even see what house they were. Where's Sebastian?"

Elliot hesitated. "Forgot to tell him."

Kurt gave him a stern look, and he sighed. "Fine, I'll text him. I would have before, but..."

"But?"

"He wouldn't have let me stay here."

"You mean he'd make you get up and drink water and eat something instead of sitting beside my bed for hours on end."

He reddened. "What if you woke up while I was gone?"

"I'd still be awake when you got back."

"Fine. I'll tell him right away next time."
