Kurt was right about Blaine learning to cast a patronus soon. It was an extra class, all the houses mixed together. Some upperclassmen were helping out with the class.

"You need to think about a happy memory," the teacher said. "Lock in on that memory, remember how it makes you feel, and then try to cast the spell. You won't get a full patronus at first, just some white mist, but with practice you'll get there. So, go ahead and try, make sure you have some space."

Jeff pointed at a wall. "Expecto patronum," he said.

A small ball of white appeared, flopping to the ground. Then it straightened up, scurrying over to Jeff and climbing onto his shoulder. He gasped. "It's a chinchilla! Look at him! Aw, I love him," he said excitedly.

Nick laughed. "Why doesn't it surprise me you got that so fast? You have nothing but happy memories."

"Mm, but I was thinking of you," Jeff flirted, kissing him.

"Do you need some help?" someone asked Wes while he stood there, trying to think of a good memory.

"I'm f—" he turned, seeing a handsome Hufflepuff boy. "Yeah, I could use some help," he said. "Can you help me with the motion?"

"Of course. Do you mind if I...?" he moved his hands slightly, asking for permission to touch Wes.

"Oh, go ahead."

"So, it's like this." He set one hand on Wes's waist, the other guiding his hand. He helped him through the motions, and Wes's heart was beating like a drum, because nobody had been that close to him in a long time.

"Expecto patronum," he said. A white misty shape appeared, something with ears, but soon dissolved.

"That was good! That was a really good first try," the upperclassman said. He started to move his hands, but Wes put his free hand over the boy's hand on his waist, stopping him.

"I don't think I've got the motions down yet," he said. "Maybe help me try again?"

He smiled, moving his hands back. "I'm David."

"Wes."

"Expecto patronum. Expecto patronum. I said expecto the goddamn patronum."

"Hey, calm down," Kurt laughed, pushing Blaine's arm down. "It's not easy. Here, relax your muscles. Take a deep breath." He lifted Blaine's arm back up. "Now focus on your memory and try again."

"Expecto patronum."

To Blaine's shock, he actually created mist, though it was soon gone. He turned to Kurt excitedly. "Did you see that? I did something!"

Kurt was grinning. "That was awesome, Blaine."

"Is that a fucking dog?" he knelt down, looking at it. "Seriously?"

"It's a German Shepherd," Sebastian said mildly, the Gryffindor looking up at him. "Very intelligent dogs, actually."

He waved it away. "Yeah, I don't think mist can be very intelligent."

Sebastian laughed. "Fair. But still, doesn't matter what animal it is, just important you can make one."

"I guess. Hunter, by the way."

"Sebastian."

"Hey, man, can you demonstrate what I'm supposed to do here?"

"Yeah."

Blaine looked over, seeing Elliot helping someone with casting their patronus. "Hey, Kurt?"

"Yeah?"

"What'd you say Elliot's patronus is again?"

"It's a bat, why?"

He frowned. "Because he just cast it and it's a leopard. Didn't you say that's yours?"

Kurt looked over, cheeks going pink as he saw that Blaine was right. "It must have changed. That happens sometimes. Anyway, let's get back to casting yours."

"It changed? Why? And why would it change to match yours?"

"Well, sometimes patronuses, ah, will change to match the patronus of someone they're, um... in love with," Kurt finished in a whisper.

But Blaine heard him. "In love with?"

Kurt hadn't really known before how much Blaine liked him. But when black dust collected at his feet, swirling, it gave him a good idea.

The idea that Blaine liked him so much that he got that upset when someone else was interested in him... No. That wasn't the most important part.

Kurt took Blaine by the shoulders, spinning him around and kissing his cheek. Blaine's eyes went wide in shock, and his obscurus disappeared.

"I'm not interested in him. He'll only ever be my friend. Are we on the same page?" Kurt said. Because he didn't want Blaine to hate Elliot. He didn't want to risk an outburst being directed at him.

Blaine was smiling widely. He could hardly believe that had just happened. "Yeah. Yeah, we are."

He chuckled at the look on his face. "C'mon, let's get back to expecto-ing the goddamn patronum."
