I arrived at the cafe late in the afternoon. It was a cooler day and the weather outside contrasted with the warmth of the cafe.
"Good afternoon, (Y/N)!" The pleasant waitress waved to me from a distance.
I waved to her as I took off my jacket and sat down in my usual spot.
She was occupied with two young men on the other side of the cafe. From what I could hear, the man with brown hair and a long tan coat was asking her to...
Hold on, did I hear that correctly?
"Please, belladonna, strangle me with these lovely hands of yours."
I furrowed my eyebrows in utter confusion. Was he serious?
The waitress kept her pleasant smile as the other man, a tall man with a blonde ponytail and glasses gave the brunette a good smack.
"For the last time Dazai, would you stop asking her that?!" He yelled at the man I assumed to be Dazai.
The waitress said something to them, but I didn't hear what it was. The two men looked at her as she made her way over to me.
"I'm sorry for the wait, (Y/N)!" She came by my table to take my order.
"I'll have the (drink of choice) please." I smiled, looking at the two men who appeared to be caught in a daze.
She followed my eyes after scribbling down my order.
"Ah, those two... the brown-haired one can be such a handful sometimes," she sighed.
"Are they regulars here?" I questioned.
"Yes, they work in the offices on the fourth floor. They're from the Armed Detective Agency."
I blinked a few times upon hearing the name. Being an ex-mafioso, it felt awkward knowing I was in the area of the Detective Agency. Although, I didn't really know much about them.
I brushed it off as the waitress left to make my order.
I took out the book I had in my bag, turning on my chair to lean against the wall. I crossed one leg over the other and started to read my book.
As it turns out, that brunette from earlier was still looking in my direction. He made his way over to me enthusiastically and took one of my hands.
"Huh, what the--" I was suddenly cut off.
"Oh, so beautiful! These hands... they're perfect for strangling me!" He gushed as he looked up at me.
His eyes were a dark brown that matched his hair. It was nice, to be honest, but my expression dropped when I realized he looked familiar.
"What's your name, sir?" I falsely smiled at him.
"My name is Dazai Osamu of the Armed Detective Agency!" He exclaimed as he stood triumphantly.
"And who might you be, miss?" He lowered his tone and leaned forward a bit to reach my level.
"I'm uh... (L/N) (Y/N) of, well, Yokohama?" I answered nervously.
Dazai smiled to himself and leaned towards my ear."I know who you are, ex-mafia," he whispered.
I shuddered at the fact he knew who I was. Now that I thought about it, he did look a little too familiar.
He stood back up and took a seat in front of me. This was just getting painful.
The man that was with him gave Dazai a look of disappointment as he turned to leave.
"Really? Come on, we have work to do," he complained.
"Wait!" Dazai called out, stopping the man in his tracks.
"What is it, Dazai?" He turned enough to see the man in front of me.
Dazai looked back at me and smiled.
"This is my partner, Kunikida," he told me as he pointed to the man beside him.
I looked up at the man beside Dazai, smiling.
As soon as I looked at him, I found him pretty attractive. He had a long blonde ponytail with messy bangs and glasses. He was really tall, I'd estimate about 189cm.
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Kunikida," I said as I shook his hand. I didn't bother using my ability, it was way too soon for that.
"You as well, Ms. ..." he waited for me to continue the sentence.
"(L/N)," I finished for him.
"Right. Well, Dazai, we should get going. I have a schedule to follow," Kunikida looked at Dazai after adjusting his glasses.
"About that, would you like to take a look?" He smiled as he handed me what I assumed was Kunikida's journal.
Kunikida looked at Dazai with an expression of shock and anger.
I took the journal and read out the cover.
"Ideals..." I said while studying the characters. I was very tempted to take a look inside.
I shrugged and handed Kunikida his journal.
"I shouldn't read what doesn't belong to me," I stated.
Kunikida accepted his journal and began to walk again.
"Wait!" Dazai interrupted, stopping Kunikida again.
"What is it now, Dazai?" Kunikida responded with an irritated tone.
"Why don't we get to know the young lady here?" Dazai pleaded.
I was a bit nervous when I heard that statement. I was never one to suddenly have conversations with people I just met, except for on jobs. I sighed and brushed it off.
"No, I have a lot of work to do for the President." Kunikida said sternly.
"Oh, come on, what's a bit of a break gonna do?" Dazai asked.
He stood up and pulled a chair for Kunikida, who hesitantly sat down with us.
"So, tell us about yourself, Miss (L/N)," Dazai turned to me with his chin resting over his folded hands.
I turned inwards to the seat and readjusted my legs. I tried to appear casual and not the fidgety mess I was because of them starting a conversation with me.
"Well," I began. "I'm currently 21 years old and live in Yokohama, and I spend a lot of my time at this cafe. I've been looking for a job for about a month now, but I can't find the right place." I continued to tell Dazai and Kunikida about myself, such as my hobbies and likes as well as dislikes.
Dazai nodded."Do you happen to be gifted?"
I froze at the question. Why would he ask that?
Kunikida had his journal open. He was reading one of the pages as he listened to what I was saying.
"Yes," I sighed in response.
Both men looked at me eagerly and I assumed they wanted to hear about my "gift."
"My ability allows me to read into the life and past of anyone I meet."
They looked at me with wide eyes.
I felt myself tensing up yet again.
"Is something the matter...?" I asked nervously.
Kunikida adjusted his glasses while Dazai looked at the table.
"No, not at all," Kunikida assured me.
I relaxed and told them more.
"The ability is actually quite simple. If I touch a person, I can absorb as much information as I want from them. If I take too much, I get a headache, and it kinda sucks. The only limitation is if someone's anti-gifted or something."
They both nodded and looked at me.
"You said you were looking for a job, yes?" Dazai asked.
"Yeah," I nodded in response.
"Well, I could always recommend you to something, if you're up for it," he smirked.
I let out a small laugh.
"I do appreciate the offer, but I think I'll be alright for now," I replied.
"What a shame," Dazai sighed dramatically.
"We could have had such a beautiful lady working for the Agency, this is truly a sad time," Dazai complained as he leaned back against the chair.
Great. They want me to work at the agency, even though Dazai knows I worked for the Port Mafia?! Either way, I'm not really suited for a job like that. Can't I just get a regular job?
I've also come to the conclusion that if I keep running into Dazai at this café, all he's gonna do is bother me.
Kunikida looked at me.
"If you ever want to reconsider, come talk to us again. We could work something out," he told me.
I felt my cheeks heat up at his kindness. Way to go, now you look like an idiot.
"Thank you, Mr. Kunikida," I said with a smile.
"It's no problem. Now, can I go and finish my work, Dazai?"
Dazai sighed in response.
"Fine, let's get out of here," he slowly got up and started to walk away.
He stopped to take my hand.
"See you soon, belladonna," he told me with a wink.
My cheeks turned a slight pink upon hearing that.
"Come on, Dazai!" Kunikida said as he grabbed Dazai's arm to drag him upstairs.
"Okay, okay! Let go of me!" Dazai shook his arm out of Kunikida's grip and walked beside him.I looked at the two men and smiled to myself as they left to go upstairs. Were they really in the Armed Detective Agency? That Dazai acted like a huge flirt the whole time. Plus, odd that he asked me to strangle him. I bet he's not always like that.
That Kunikida was rather interesting though.
I brushed it all off and packed up the things I brought with me, putting on my coat to leave.
I made it back to my apartment safe and sound. I was a bit bored, so I decided to do some research on this Agency. If I liked the results, I might just consider the offer from earlier.
I looked into the history of some of the members, learning about their abilities and such, since I never used my ability on them. I learned that the Agency is rather small compared to the mafia, with only a few ability users, a couple of office workers, and the President.
Curiosity got the best of me as I decided to look more into the two men I met today, Kunikida and Dazai. I learned more about their abilities.
Kunikida had the ability called "Lone Poet" which allowed him to create anything that was the size of his notebook by writing it down. That seemed impressive.
My heart skipped a beat when I read about Dazai. I read.. nothing? There was absolutely no information on Dazai anywhere. This is odd. I can't find a single thing...
I sighed and shut off the PC I was working on. I let myself think for a while, before heading off to bed for the night. Luckily, I remembered to change my clothing this time.
I laid in bed considering my options. What if I joined the agency? I'd have a job, for one, and I'd be able to get close with and probably befriend some ability users that aren't as ruthless as the ones in the mafia. That would be an awful nice change.
Though, the mafia would not be very happy if they found out.
I shrugged in bed as I drifted off to sleep, wondering what the next day will bring me.--
