. . .
So, that happened. Yeah, it may seem pretty confusing to a guy my age, but to a kid Macey's age, it was very easy to understand. And quite frankly, it was one of the best things a teenager could experience these days, well at least in their mind. She practically squealed in the passenger seat of her mom's car.
"What are you so excited about?" Her mom asked.
"Oh, uh, nothing. It's just, Target tweeted Happy Labor Day, how sweet." She stammered.
"Oh, really? That is really sweet." Her mom replied.
Macey did see that Happy Labor Day tweet, but we all know what she was really excited about.
Ever since Trent's party last week--- Oh, did I forget to tell you guys about that? Sorry, let's rewind a bit.
1 week earlier
Macey sat in Mr. Shapiro's class, waiting for Mr. Shapiro to explain the lesson for that particular day. She lightly tapped her pencil against the desk, her head resting on her other hand.
"What if Anne Frank had an iPhone?" He asked as he stood up. "What if Winston Churchhill had Wi-Fi?" He sat crisscross on his desk, which would have weirded Macey out about a month ago, but now she was already used to the weirdness of her teacher.
"This week, we're gonna break up into groups to pitch app ideas that could've been used to mitigate the atrocities of the second World War." That's all it took to receive annoyed groans from his students.
Teenagers.
"Just for one day, can we learn something that'll be on future AP tests?" Ben asked, receiving a nod of agreement from Macey.
"Come on. I worked really hard to find a lesson that was outside of the box for you guys." Mr. Shapiro whined, "Whatever. Just break up into groups of three."
Macey sat there, wishing any of her friends would be here, at least then it wouldn't be as hard grouping up with a complete stranger instead of two complete strangers. Devi and Paxton were here, but she doubted they would partner up with her.
She looked over at Ben, who happened to also not have a group. She sighed sharply, rolling her eyes mentally at the thought of being grouped with Ben Gross. She thought maybe it would be best if she worked alone, but she knew Mr. Shapiro thought otherwise.
"Okay. Who does't have a group yet?" When Mr. Shapiro asked that, Paxton tapped her shoulder. She turned, her eye brows furrowed.
"You should be in our group." He suggested, gesturing toward Trent, who was playing with a bendy pencil.
Macey soon dropped her own pencil, smiling at Paxton before climbing down under the desk, "Hold on a sec."
After about three minutes, Paxton crouched down next to her.
"What are you doing?" He whispered.
"I, uh, dropped my pencil." She replied.
"You've been down there for the past three minutes." He mentioned.
"Yeah, I couldn't find it." She stammered, along with her infamous nervous laugh.
She attempted to crawl back to her seat, hitting her head on the desk in the process.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"Why wouldn't I be?" She asked, receiving a nod from Paxton as he sat back down in his seat.
She let go of a breath she didn't even know she was holding, and made her way back to her seat. She put her face in her hands.
"So, you wanna be in our group or not?" Paxton asked.
"Yes! I mean, yeah, I guess that could work." She face palmed herself mentally.
Get a grip, Macey!
"Presentations are due on monday." Mr. Shapiro mentioned.
"We could meet at my house. I got a shitload of Uncrustables in the freezer." Trent told them.
"Nice." Paxton answered.
"Hey." She heard Trent call.
She turned around, eyebrows knitted together.
"You're Macey, right?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure I am." She replied.
Trent chuckled a little bit, "Paxton told me about you."
"Did he?" She asked, a slight smile forming.
"Yeah." He answered, "You're right, she is pretty." He whispered to Paxton, well it was meant to be a whisper, anyways. Macey heard it loud and clear.
Maybe things were easier this time around, but yet again, when have you heard this story to be easy?
