Song: Me Too - Meghan Trainor
----------------------------------------
Hands in the pocket, tie loose around his partially unbuttoned shirt, his gait radiating absolute confidence, Miya Atsumu walked up the slope to Inarizaki High with his twin, Miya Osamu, believing that this was the exact moment in the universe when he truly felt that he had... arrived. It was the first day of his second year in high school, and they already ranked top 4 nation-wide in volleyball. The world was only moments away from bowing down to his skills, his handsome looks, and his caliber in sports.
He stopped at the gate of his school, turned right, gazed into the sakura trees that have blossomed fully, and whispered to the gentle spring breeze, "I've finally arrived," almost manifesting his confidence, and letting the universe know that they had better be prepared for his... awesomeness... for the lack of a better word that he couldn't come up with on such short notice.
"Yes, Captain Obvious, we have reached our school. What are you, a doofus, for saying it out loud? Nutter," murmured Osamu, as he walked ahead with an expression on his face that described exactly how unlucky he felt about sharing a fraction of his genes with someone who would do nothing to contribute to Darwin's Theory of Evolution in his lifetime. As a bizarre thought trickled into the back of his head, Osamu swivelled around abruptly and burst out exclaiming with the most disgust that he could muster, "Wait a damn minute! When you said 'arrived,' please don't tell me... oh ew! EW! THAT'S GROSS MAN! EW, WHAT A PERVERT!"
That successfully pulled Atsumu out of his daydreams, and he tut-tutted at his twin for tearing apart a dream so sweet that it was almost tangible.
"Shut yer trap! That's not what I meant!"
Still sporting a disgusted expression, Osamu shivered at the thought of having such a bovine for a twin, and walked ahead at a much faster rate.
Atsumu let out a harsh breath and trailed after him, entering the gate that was flanked by tall poles carrying a few solar panels.
While it wasn't a super premier school, Inarizaki High did boast some really cool facilities within its campus, and thanks to its well performing school clubs, the budgets allowed a lot of freedom to upgrade the campus.
Atsumu absorbed what he saw on the path that leaded to the academic building, that was bustling with students and solitary counters that were laid out linearly on both sides. Very similar to a typical first day of the academic year, each counter seemed to represent the currently active school clubs. But unlike the previous years, the quality of their banners had degraded so much that they were now sporting borderline hilarious and extremely sad call-to-action quotes. He needed to find the clown who came up with "Come with us! Our basketball adventure awaits!" or "Even if nobody believes in you, keep going and join The Soccer Club." They were really begging him to say something snide. He was about to start with wisecrack before he hears a cool tenor to his left.
"It would be wiser to join us and promote our club, Atsumu."
Shit.
"Ah ha ha, Kita-san! How'd ya know, I was just on my way, actually," he let out chuckle while slowly turning around where his teammates and his twin stood, judging him.
Kita Shinshuke, the quiet yet intense volleyball captain only had to gaze at him for a few moments to get Atsumu to make a beeline for the club counter.
"We would like to have as many first years join us as possible. I have a few sign-up sheets ready, so let's try and get as many as possible till the week ends," said Kita while organising the desk covered in papers, newspapers and magazine clippings of their matches at the nationals and some pamphlets to distribute to first years.
Atsumu mindlessly picked up a lay volleyball and started to spin it on his fingertips as he casually observed his diligent captain. How he managed to stay on top of everything in his life starting from his family to his academics and club activities, was beyond his ability to fathom any of it. Word had it that the last Student Council president often consulted him on multiple school activities even though he was a year junior to him.
Suddenly, in the middle of his musings, Atsumu was hit by a bouquet of roses. Not literally, but his sense of smell felt sweetly overwhelmed by the smell of roses. And in the middle of a bunch of sakura trees even!
At the same time, one of the occupants of the counter next to theirs let out a sneeze loud enough to start fateful chain of reactions that would be his eventual undoing.
Suna Rintarou, who stood right next to the source of the sneeze, facing away from it, was startled just enough, by the loudness of the sneeze that he spit out the Pocky he was currently munching on, onto Osamu's phone screen, who was mindlessly scrolling through his Instagram account.
A vehement yell of horror from Osamu came with a combination of flustered hand movements that knocked the spinning ball off of Atsumu's finger.
Ojiro Aran, standing opposite to Suna Rintarou across the counter, was now speedily tracking the chain reaction that was set off by what could have possibly been an allergic or infectious sneeze. Easily predicting where the ball was now leading, he was about to the pull a raven haired girl away from the path of the ball before he realised that he didn't actually need to.
Along with Aran, a set of melting chocolate eyes also followed the general direction of the now-out-of-control ball. He registered a blurred figure that entered in his peripheral vision without a warning. But before even he could warn the figure, that he now deduced was a girl judging by the length of hair on her, she did quick footwork before launching the ball back in the air with her right foot, curving it to her left, and carried on walking like nothing happened.
Kita dropped the papers in his hands onto the desk, to catch a Mikasa ball that fell into his hands out of nowhere. All other eyes, except one, at the counter swerved towards him holding the ball and back towards the general direction of the person that displayed pretty neat reflexes and footwork.
While most of them were still digesting what just happened, Atsumu stayed gripped at the sight of her straight raven hair flowing from the edges of a white baseball cap, till he lost sight of her in the unidirectional crowd walking into their school campus.
----------------------------------------
"Hi, I'd like apply for being a member of the Student Council. May I have a sign-up sheet please?"
Watanabe Rina, a smartly dressed and sharp-witted third year Inarizaki student looked up from her list of students who wanted to join the student council, to see a smiling face under a white baseball cap.
"Sure. My name is Watanabe Rina, I'm a third year and I am the Student Council president this year. May I know if you have any preferred positions you'd like to apply for?" asked Rina.
"Yes. If, selected I'd like to be appointed as the treasurer," the raven haired replied, with her eyes wrinkling in the corners as she smiled wider. "Looks like I'll be in your care Senpai. May I meet you during lunch break to seek some guidance?"
Rina smiled at her candour and responded, "I don't see why not. Are you a first year?" she added.
"Oh no, I'm a second year. But that's a long story. I'll be happy to tell you about it during lunch break. Thank you Senpai!"
With that, she left Rina, skipping away into the academic building. She looked on at her merry ways, quietly musing about how she could be a good vibe check for the council with her charm, and also wondering at how there was a hint of sweet scent of roses amidst the pink of sakura surrounding her.
