"There have been so many times

 I have seen a man

 wanting to weep,

 but instead,

 beat his heart

 until it was

 unconscious."

When Ace awoke that morning, the first thing he heard, even before he opened his eyes, was soft giggling

When Ace awoke that morning, the first thing he heard, even before he opened his eyes, was soft giggling.

He laid where he was, trying to figure out what was going on.

Slowly, he blinked and his eye fluttered open.

The first thing he saw was the smiling face of Scarlett Ambrose, her bright blue eyes shining.

Scarlett seemed to be everywhere these days.

He blinked again, slowly, adjusting his eyes to the surroundings as Scarlett watched the mesmerizing green in his eyes.

"Uncle Ace!" Cassie's excited voice came as she popped her head into view.

She was beaming at him, her curly blonde hair pulled into a ponytail and a headband which matched the bright green bandana that Scarlett was wearing was tied around her head.

"You're awake," Cassie said, as Ace straightened himself.

He looked around.

He was on the floor of Cassie's room, seated in the middle of a blanket and an array of pillows. Slowly, the memories of the night before came back to him.

After Cassie put on Sleeping Beauty for her to watch with Scarlett, both girls had fallen asleep on Cassie's bed. Not wanting to leave them alone since Cassie was so young and Scarlett's behaviour around thunderstorms was unpredictable, he had brought some blankets and pillows, put them on the floor near the bed and gone to sleep.

He looked from Cassie to Scarlett, who were grinning idiotically at him.

"Why are the two of you so amused?" he asked, furrowing his brow.

The two girls exchanged a look and burst out into a fit of giggles.

"Nothing," Cassie said, innocently, walking over to Ace and climbing into his lap.

He kissed the top of her head. "I like your headband," he told her.

Cassie smiled. "It matches Sky's. She and I are wearing green. See?"

Cassie held her t-shirt for Ace to see, while Scarlett straightened and showed off her bright green tank top, too, a wide smile on her face.

The terrors of the night before had been forgotten.
