"You thought I wouldn't survive.

You thought I'd come running back,
but look at me now.

I glow from within,
even in the dark.

Kaius Wickham.

Kaius Wickham.

Kaius Wickham.

Scarlett blinked.

Still Kaius Wickham.

"Mr. Wickham." Ace's voice didn't have the same tone of friendliness it did when he addressed one of his friends. Rather, it was cool and distant, like he couldn't care less about Mr. Wickham. Unfortunately, he had no idea who Kaius Wickham actually was, because if he did, his tone would have been very different. "This is one of my employees, Scarlett Ambrose."

Kai rose from his seat, like he had risen from the dead in Scarlett's life.

He wore a light grey blazer, a white shirt, open at the collar, without a tie, and a shit-eating grin.

He didn't look in the least different from the last time that Scarlett had seen him, seated at that table at the Waterfront restaurant, glaring at her as she got up to go to the bathroom. His slim face had the same sinister undertones, his light grey eyes still hooded and clouded with secrets, his posture still way too cocky for a man who could barely do anything other than make people uncomfortable, and his thin lips still pressed into the same dastardly smile as it had many years ago.

He seemed absolutely delighted to make the acquaintance of Scarlett Ambrose, who looked uncannily like the Vanessa Winters he had known.

One hand lazily in his pocket, he extended his right hand to Scarlett, the smarmy grin of his face spreading.

"Scarlett," said the voice that she had spent years trying to forget, "Ambrose." He said it almost like he was testing the words in his mouth to see if they left a favourable taste. He had a delighted gleam in his eyes that made Scarlett want to cower behind Ace. "What an absolute pleasure to make your acquaintance."

She stared back at him, a phantom from her past, wondering if he was in fact, real.

The fingers on her right hand twitched as she looked from him to his extended hand as Kai pretended that he had never met her. She wasn't sure whether to go along with it or to strangle him right then and there.

She stood tall and unafraid.

She wouldn't let him get to her.

The lull in the conversation made Ace raise his head, realizing that something was wrong. He hadn't been fond of the suggestive tone in Kai's voice when he addressed Scarlett.
