Seducing powerful men into telling her all of their secrets is Scarlett Ambrose's specialty. Ace Hardwood is probably no exception.

"And they roared as loud as thunder and carried lightning
in the strike of their cruelty,
but what are thunder and lightning to fearless girls
who are used to carrying
entire storms
and hurricanes in their fingertips?"

When Scarlett Ambrose was six years old, she was rushed to the hospital with severe loss of blood, many cuts and bruises and a fractured ribcage.
She was in critical condition for days.
When she woke up, she was in immeasurable pain for weeks, finding it difficult to breathe.
The fact that her parents had passed away did nothing to ease the pain.
She had no one.
The nurses in pediatric care did everything they could for the orphaned girl and she put on a bright smile for them, hiding her pain even at such a tender age.
It was then that the first rose of hers became a thorn.
As much physical pain as she had been in, she recovered. The wounds showed and people cared for her.
Now, however, her wounds weren't visible.
She was in emotional pain that somehow managed to clench her heart like an invisible fist was squeezing the life out of it.
No one could see her wounds.
Scarlett buried her head in Grace's lap and did the same thing and pretty much the only thing she had been doing for that entire week: She cried.
Her heart had never ached so much before.
Grace smoothed Scarlett's hair. "Scarlett, my darling, I know it hurts. That's what happens when you fall in love."
Scarlett gripped Ace's handkerchief. She hadn't let go of it since she fished it out of her bag.
She sniffed, silent tears falling on to Grace's lap.
"He looked at me like he didn't know me, Gracie. Like I was a stranger. Just a few hours before that he told me that he loved me. Oh, God, Gracie, this hurts so much. Why does this hurt so much? I want to take my heart out of my body, Gracie. It hurts too much to have it. It hurts every time I breathe."
Scarlett inhaled sharply and erratically as she sobbed.
"I ruined it for myself, Gracie. I was so scared to tell him. I didn't want to lose him. Gracie, he's the one, Gracie. I spent my life waiting for him and I lost him because I was scared," Scarlett cried, "Just when I did the right thing, it all came crashing down."
