Scarlett felt like she was walking on air.
She was in love and she had just held her own at Terrence's office.
She was free of him.
She was free to be herself.
She didn't have to live a lie anymore.
She had to tell Ace, but she was ready to.
It was impossible for her to keep it to herself anymore.
If they were going to take the next step, she needed to come clean to him.
As she walked into the large atrium of Woods Towers, her high heels clicking against the tile, she took a deep breath to give herself the strength she needed.
She couldn't help, but feel like she was on some kind of high and that there was absolutely nothing that could break the happiness that she was feeling at that moment.
She practically skipped up to Gretchen's desk.
"Hey, Gretchen, is Ace in?" she asked.
The lady looked up, her curly hair bouncing around her. "Actually, no. He went home."
Scarlett raised her eyebrows. "That's early. It's only five."
Gretchen nodded. "Yes, I was surprised, too, but he seemed to be in a mood."
"He was mad about something?" Scarlett asked, confused. She would have thought that, like her, Ace would be elated.
Gretchen nodded. "He didn't say anything, though. Just that he was going home."
Scarlett pulled out her phone. "He didn't tell me," she said, looking at the absence of notifications. "When I left him, he was fine. What happened?"
Gretchen shrugged. "Maybe something about the semi-annual launch? I don't know, really."
Frowning, Scarlett asked, "You're sure nothing happened? No one said anything?"
Gretchen shook her head. "Oh, well, Dan Andrews was here, but that boy couldn't anger anyone."
Scarlett's heart stopped.
Her whole world stopped.
"Dan Andrews was here?"
The older woman nodded. "He came in just after Ace got back and left a while later. Sometime later, Ace left."
Scarlett could feel her hands shaking. "Okay. Thanks, Gretchen. I think I'll get home, too."
"Alright. See you later, baby."
Scarlett turned and took in the lady's face. Suddenly, she wondered, in the back of her mind, whether it would be the last time that she saw Gretchen. "Goodbye, Gretchen," she said, softly.
