"Cmon, [Y/n]. Volleyball's fun. And i figure you already got the hang of it?" Kageyama begged to you again and again. He was right there standing in front of you playing a match of volleyball against a wall.
You were sitting on the ground with your knees up your chest, quietly watching him. Your hands resting on your knees as you wonder how did this boy get into your life with no logical reason you could think of.
"Join me. A little volleyball session won't hurt, right?" A little laugh escaped his lips.
You looked down, thinking back to hurtful events you've been through. A sad smile on your face, the ones no one ever noticed.. or cared about. All you can do was lie. "Yeah.."
Kageyama kept playing for a few minutes while having small talks with you. With him wanting to know you more and more. He eventually stopped and went to the vending machines to get a box of milk.
He sat down beside you not saying anything. But his eyes were on you, always.
"Why do you want to become friends with me so bad?" You asked as you looked deeply into his black eyes that shines bright beneath the sun.
"It's not like i'm trying too-" He face flushed red. "I'm trying to hard, am i?" A grin drawn on his face. You smiled mentally, not wanting to show your emotions to a guy you've barely known.
"Why?"
"I don't know either." He shrugged his shoulder.
After that, none of you said a word. It was a peaceful silence for a solid five minutes.
"Hey," Kageyama said, scooting over closer to you.
"Mhm?"
"If there's a picture, an illustration perhaps, where there's a cloud blocking the sun. What could it possibly mean?" He asked. A genuine expression on his face, meaning he was not joking or playing around with that question.
You greatfully answer them. "Well, i'm not much of a poetic person or anything. But i think it's someone who hides their real self.. or emotion.. from other people." You were not sure, but at least that is what's on your mind.
"And why is that?" He asked again.
"How would i know?" You wrinkled your forehead at his question.
"Oh.. yeah, right." He let a tiny laugh out with a smile.
Still sitting right next to you, Kageyama grabbed a ball and started playing with it, tossing it to the air multiple times. He was utterly confused how could you despite volleyball that much. But he then came into a conclusion that you were probably so exhausted to the point it made you feel extra hate and ignorance towards a ball.
"Me and the team are gonna have a practice after school tomorrow. Wanna watch?" Kageyama asked. His eyes filled with hope and you can notice it in the first glance.
"Y-you can bring a friend too.. if you don't wanna come alone." Kageyama's cheeks turned crimson when he saw you looking at him longer than five seconds while saying nothing at all. You melted at his awkwardness.
"A friend.." You took your eyes off of him and look forward. "You're.. the first one, actually."
"Oh, um.." He went silent, not knowing what to say. "Then come alone?"
"If i can." You said.
"Here." Kageyama put the volleyball he's been holding onto between your knees and leaving it there. His eyes stared at yours, a soft and comforting type of stare.
"I told you i don't wanna play." You rolled your eyes at the setter playfully.
"Please. I'll be playing with you. I promise it'll be worth your time." His soft voice flew out his lips like a calming breeze of wind. It somehow pushed you into the edge even if it was unintentional. How he tried to convince you with only his voice, and the fact that it was scarily convincing.
"Just this once." You finally answered after thinking about it for a while.
Feeling incredibly excited, Kageyama stood up quickly. He blocked the sunlight as he stood in front of you, offering his hand for you to take. He smiled genuinely. And for real, this time, your heart skiped a beat. Returning his smile, you took his hand and stood up. A small tension was built up as you both locked eyes.
Kageyama turned around and jogged towards his school bag. You heard the sound of keys jingling. Curious, you walked up to him.
"I stole this earlier," He showed the keys to you, a big grin spreaded across his face.
He lead you inside the court. His heart racing, excitement rushing. He didn't know why he felt that way. All he knew was you were the cause of it.
"Come on, [Y/n]! I'll set for you." Kageyama ran to the center of the court.
You felt mixed up feelings, bottling up in your chest. And you knew it could explode anytime. It's been a while since you've spiked a volleyball. You were sucked up in sadness and anger, you never loved volleyball ever since. You forgot how good it felt. Yet now, you're here in a volleyball court. That one place you hate the most. That one place who took him away.
"A-are you okay?" Worried was written all over Kageyama's face. No one could deny that.
"Let's do this." You said, avoiding to answer that question. Kageyama still had a worried look, but that doesn't weaken his sets.
You jumped, targeting the ball, locking your eyes to it. Then, you hit it, hard. You felt that again, against your hand. The unexplained feelings of joy. A smile creeped on your face, turning into a laugh of satifaction.
Kageyama's expression softened. He smiled at you. Admiring every side of you, it's been his expretise all along.
You've never thought you could smile again with a volleyball in you hand. But you did. And it was all because of him.
