We lay side by side in the grass,
Looking up at the clouds surrounding us.
Our fingers intertwined over the damp blades of green.
"I'm going to hurt you eventually."
His words came out low and pained,
His eyes not leaving the sky.
I did not believe him.
"I won't mean to,"
He murmured, turning to face me.
"But I'll leave your heart black and blue."
The breeze picked up, blowing his hair across his face.
All I did was shrug and look back to the sky.
Because I was invincible.
I never got too close to allow that to happen.
Oh but he hurt me.
There one day and gone the next.
Like he said,
He didn't want to leave me.
But he had to go.
Far far away.
Leaving me alone.
I lay here alone,
Looking at the stars
In the wet grass.
Allowing the cold to numb my skin,
Wishing it would do the same to the searing pain in my chest.
Because I got too close.
Because I ignored his warnings.
And now my heart is black and blue.
