"It was the goodbye that killed me."
Harley's POV:
"Harley!" Y/n shouted, her voice being muffled by the water I was currently sinking in. Her arms wrapped around my frame and pulled me to the surface. As soon as my head broke through, I started laughing, wrapping my arms around her neck as she held me up, her clothes soaked through while she wore a concerned look on her face.
"Hey, sugar." I grinned, fiddling with the baby hairs on the back of her neck.
"What the hell are you doing?! You can't swim!" Y/n huffed, her features softening up some, "You scared me."
I pouted, snuggling my face under her chin while I kissed the moist skin, "I'm sorry, sugar. Please forgive me."
"It's okay, Harles." Y/n sighed, walking towards the beach, "I can teach you to swim if you want."
"Really?!" I beamed, excitement sparking up inside of me.
"Yeah," Y/n hummed, looking at me as the moon and stars shined behind us. Slowly I got out of y/n's gentle hold, my feet connecting with the sand.
"Can you teach me now?" I sunk my teeth into my bottom lip, bouncing on the balls of my feet. Y/n cracked a small grin and nodded, making me squeal.
"I'll be in the shallow part, I promise." Quickly kissing her cheek I skipped back out towards the water, standing in the shallow part that just barely kissed the back of my knees.
A flock of birds flew by, their silhouette in the moon made it look like the most delicate of paintings.
"Y/n, look!" I grinned, turning to look back towards the beach, the rest of my words dying on my tongue when I noticed she wasn't there.
"Y/n?" I called, looking around. I yelped and every hair on my body stood up when a loud gunshot rang through the air, scaring off the birds.
Blood started mixing in with the water and my chest rose and fell in panic. My fingers glided through the water, like I was trying to separate the liquid but it was pointless.
"Y/n!" I yelled a little more sharply, trying to keep myself calm. A large wave came crashing down on me, sweeping my body out further into the ocean.
My body tumbled through the seafloor, wincing when I hit a small bed of rocks. My own blood trickled up to the surface while my ears rang, water filling my lungs. I opened my mouth to scream, nothing but bubbles coming out.
"CLEAR!" A doctor yelled, shocking my chest and I shot up, eyes fluttering open. It took a moment to adjust to the bright lights in the room, noticing a nurse and a doctor in the room.
"She's back." The female doctor blew out in relief, her eyes sunken in and she looked tired. After a few more minutes, the doctor and nurse left, not before promising to check on me soon.
"You scared me." Y/n mumbled from next to me. My eyes glanced over to see her sitting in one of the chairs placed in the corner.
I scoffed, turning back so my gaze fell on the ceiling, "I'm not talking to you."
"I'm sorry." Y/n mumbled, "I panicked and so I pushed you off. I had no idea they were going to start beating you."
"I dreamt about us one night. We were in love and you could tell by the way that you looked at me. The way you kissed me. Hell, even the way you held my hand. You were so gentle with me. I cried when I woke up."
"Why did you cry?" Y/n husked.
"Because it was a nightmare." I deadpanned, no emotion in my voice other than exhaustion.
"Who are you talking to?" The female doctor, Dr. Sage stitched into the off white coat she wore, furrowed her eyebrows while she seemed to check my vitals.
"I was talking to-" I glanced over to where y/n was sitting, to find she wasn't there. My eyebrows furrowed close together, looking back towards the woman, ".. Just myself."
Dr. Sage looked unsure but nodded nonetheless, writing down important things as she updated my chart.
"You have a concussion and there was some bleeding to the brain from where you hit your head. I want to keep you here for another day or so in the event something happens. We did stop the bleeding that was in your brain but there is always the chance we missed something. I am confident we didn't, but like I said I want to keep you here just to be sure." Dr. Sage smiled warmly at me, tucking a strand of her honey blonde hair behind her ear.
"Okay." I mumbled hoarsely. My doctor left the room moments later and I sighed to myself, glancing back over to the chair y/n was sitting in to see her there.
"Where the hell were you?" I hissed.
Y/n's semi bushy eyebrows shot up in surprise, her mouth dropping open, "I've been here the entire time."
The angry expression I wore softened, tears welling in my eyes as I turned away from her once again.
"Harles-"
"No!" I snapped, swallowing down the lump in my throat, "I'm not talking to you."
"Can we at least talk about what happened?" Y/n weakly replied.
I decided to remain silent, not even daring to look at her no matter how much I wanted too. I couldn't give in.
So, I let my demons take a hold of me and guide me to lay in the bed of bleeding roses and sharp thorns. They made my bed, tucked me in and yet as I held Satan's hand, I prayed my dreams wouldn't turn to nightmares.
"Only the strong fight their demons and win, because demons don't fight fair."
