Maddi's Pov-

My heart and brain were in a battle. My heart wanted to keep kissing JJ. To live in this moment. But my brain wanted me to stop. Wanted us to talk out our problems.

For now... my heart wins.

Our lips barley broke apart. Neither of us wanted this moment to end. The sounds of crickets surronded us and it seemed as if every star shined a little brighter in this moment. JJ started leading kisses down my jawline. I breathed heavily, trying to catch my breath. His lips made their way down my neck. I wanted this moment to never end but now my brain took the lead.

"JJ" I whisper out of breath. He just hums in responce leading his kissing back to my mouth. His lips meet mine once again. But this time I pulled apart. He looked at me confusion taking over his facial features.

"What's up?" He asks breathing heavy as both of us try to catch our breaths.

"We should talk" I say nodding over to a fallen down tree that was probably knocked over. He shakes his head in agreement. We walk over and sit down on the tree facing out look at the stars. The silence starts to naw away at me. So finally I talk.

"What do you want us to be? I know what I want but I need to know what you want" I blurt out. The words spill out of my mouth like work throw up. He stays silent for a while just staring at the stars. I take a deep breath and look back at the stars. The silence overtakes my ears. As I count the stars JJ finally speaks us.

"Honestly, I don't know. I mean you're my best friend Maddi" JJ starts to explain. I rub my hands on my leg anxiously. "And I want something"

My ears perk up when he says the last thing. He wants something.

"But..."

Oh god here we go.

"I don't think I'm ready to trust you again" his voice is quiet an almost whisper. Our eyes finally meet. His eyes flicker from my lips to my eyes again. Mine do the same.

"Okay" I whisper. "So what are we?" Our eyes still pour into each other as I talk.

"Friends? ..... for now" he suggest.

For now those words repeat through my head. Eventually maybe we can be something again. I just need to wait. I stand up and reach my hand out.

"Friends.... for now" I smile. He stands up and shakes my hand with a slight chuckle. Our hands don't separate. We stare at each other neither of us making the first move. I break my eye contact and look at the ground. I nervously bite my lip.

"Oh f*ck it" JJ mutters. My gaze shoots up to him. He takes my hand that he is still holding and pulls me into him. His other hand goes to my back. And once again our lips meet. Butterfly's flutter around in my stomach. As our lips move in sync with each other. Our heartbeats beat for the other one. It's almost as if we are two halves and together we're whole. We pull apart and look at each other.

"Friends with benefits?" I ask sheepishly. He smiles and nods his head.

"Deal"

After talking for a while interrupted my random make out sessions we make a set of rules.

1.) we don't tell the group

2.) no strings attached. Just friends. (That occasionally make out)

3).we can see other people.

The last one I hate. The idea of JJ with another girl makes me sick to my stomach. But I hurt him and he needs to learn to trust me again. This is a start.

I know I'm not going to see anyone else. JJ is the only one for me. And I'm going to prove it to him.

I drive back to the chateau where I see Topper waiting for me. He's laying on the pullout watching something on tv.

"Hey Top" I plop in the couch next to him. He was sipping on a beer. I reach over and grab it stealing a sip of his beer.

"Give it back" he groans grabbing it from my hands. He takes a swig. A smile hasn't left my mouth the whole way home.

"What's got you all smiley?" He questions nudging my shoulder. A blush creeps onto my face. I try to hide it but it's too late.

"Okay what is it?" He pushes further.

"I'll tell you but you can't tell anyone." I explain. He pretends to lock his lips and throw away the key.

"Okay"

"Okay so I may or may not have kissed jj" Toppers jaw drops at my statement, his eyes wide. "3 times"

"No way!" He exclaims. "Are y'all back together" his voice is laced with excitement. I look down not wanting to tell him what happened.

"Not exactly" I mutter playing with my hands awkwardly.

"What do you mean 'not exactly'?"

"We're kinda friends with benefits for now" I blurt out. He nods his head in understanding.

"Is that what you want?"  I shake my head no.

"No but it's a start" I sigh taking his beer and drinking some more before handing it back.

"Just remember to be careful . I don't want to see your heart broken again" Topper explains. I lay my head on his shoulder and look to the show playing on tv.

"Yeah, I don't either" my voice is an almost whisper.

"And if he does I'll beat him up" he jokes but there's a hint of seriousness behind his voice.

"Thanks Top."
