Chapter 2: I like him

Maya's POV

"Riley, there's something I need to tell you," I say. We're sitting on the window seat in Riley's bedroom. I'm staying here this weekend, since my mom has an audtition in California she's going to. I'd probably stay here even if she was home, though. Me and my mom have never been very close.

I love it at Riley's house. I love her parents, I love her brother, I love her grandparents, her Uncle Eric, Aunt Morgan, Uncle Josh, even her aunt, Nebula Stop-The-War Lawrence, who, once you get past her ridiculus name, is really nice.

My mom is a waitress, my dad left a long time ago, and my grandma (Gammy) loves me but is kind of out there, if you know what I mean. She has a crush on Farkle!

So, the Matthews are basically my family. And I would never want to hurt them.

But that might be what I'm about to do.

Riley's liked Lucas Friar ever since we bumped into him on the subway (yes, she literally bumped into him. She fell into his lap). I only just realized that I like him too. We're best friends, so I need to tell her.

"I like Lucas," I mangage to blurt out. Immediately I feel relieved, but then I see the look on Riley's face.

Shock. Sadness. Like she's just lost Amanda McScrambleface (long story).

"I'm sorry Riles. I didn't want to keep it from you any longer, but I didn't want to tell you either," I whisper, putting my hand on her's.

Riley looks at me. She puts my hands, crossed, on my lap and tucks my hair behind my ear. "You can always tell me things, Maya. I can't believe you like him, and of course I wish you didn't, but I understand. I mean, it's not like it's your fault." 

"Thanks," I say. 

"No problem," Riley replies, "Just promise me that no matter what happens with Lucas, we won't let him come between us. Best friends before boyfriends, okay?" 

"Okay," I reply, "Best friends before boyfriends."
