Chapter 7: Crazy Hat talk

Riley's POV

How could Maya do this to me? She knows I like Lucas.

How could Lucas do this to me? He knows I like him.

How could Farkle and my dad do this to me? Why are they so happy for Maya and Lucas?

I ignore Maya's shouts and pleas for me to come back. I pound out the tall glass doors and keep running.

Finally I run out of breath. I sit down for a rest in the subway station, next to Evelyn, or as Maya and I always call her: Crazy Hat.

It takes me a minute to realize she's staring at me. "What's wrong, honey?" she asks.

"You know how you said you always observed that me and Maya were best friends?" I question. "Well, we aren't anymore." I look down at my hands, waiting for her to answer.

"This couldn't be about that handsome young man you're always drooling over now, could it?" she asks.

"Lucas? How did you know?" I ask. Am I really that obvious?

"Oh honey, that boy has been looking at that friend of your's ever since I met you three on the subway. I thought you would have noticed by now." she shrugs.

"He's liked her this whole time." I say aloud, amazed. "And I haven't even noticed because I've been too busy trying to get him to like me. I've been too busy thinking about myself to realize it's Maya that Lucas likes."

Evelyn just sits, listening to me, as I spill everything that's happened this past week. The nervous face Maya had when she told me she liked Lucas. The support Farkle had given me, even though I was hurting him. The pure love and fierce affection in Lucas's voice as he talked to Maya in the hall.

She's listening intently. "I think what you need," she begins, "is to talk to Maya. And Farkle. And Lucas. You've all got some explaining to do."

I nod.

"Well then, you be on your way now, darling." Crazy Hat says. "You know where to find me."
