Lucas's POV
"So before we leave, I have to hand out these forms to you," Mr. Matthews says, walking down the aisles of students, giving us each a slip of paper. "The John Quincy Adams Valentine's day dance is coming up, and in order to go, you'll need to have these forms, signed, on my desk by this Friday."
"Ooh, a dance!" Riley exclaims, taking her form. "It's time to get my party on!" She stands up and sashayed to Mr. Matthew's desk. "Jazz hands time!" she says, grinning at her best friend, Maya.
"Don't do that, Riles," Maya shakes her head.
I notice Maya smiling at me. I smile back. I'm surprised that she doesn't make any "hoedown" comments. I'm from Texas, and she loves to make fun of me for it. I know she's just teasing though, and to be honest, I kind of like it.
Actually, I kind of like everything about Maya.
A few months ago, I came to New York and joined this school. I met Maya and Riley on the subway, and, I'll admit it, I thought Maya was gorgeous. Riley's cute too, but to me she seems like someone I'd have as a sister or cousin or something. Maya, I don't know. I think I really like her.
I know Riley has a crush on me, which is sweet and everything, but every time I catch her staring at me or see her inching closer to me, I can't help but wish it were Maya who liked me. Then again, you can't really tell who Maya likes. I while ago I thought it might be Farkle. Or that rebel kid who sat behind me that one time. Or maybe Riley's uncle, Josh. But as I thought about it more, I knew none of them could be it.
So, with the dance coming up, maybe she'll finally admit who it is she's crushing on. And maybe, hopefully, It'll be me.
