Girl Meets Valentine's Day [lucaya fanfic]

Chapter 5: Comfort

Lucas's POV

Maya runs out of the classroom. I follow her.

She walks forward, her combat boots tapping the concrete floor. 

"Lucas, stop following me," she says suddenly. I hold my breath. Did she hear me tiptoeing after her?

She turns around. "I just can't-"

I cut her off. "What can't you do, Maya? Is it really this hard to go to the dance with me? Is it too embarrassing to be seen with Bucky Mcboingboing, is it?"

She smiles a little at "Bucky Mcboingboing". "No, Lucas. I just- I-" she sighs. "I can't hurt Riley. She's my only friend. Her family, and her, they're all I have."

Does she really think that's true? "Boy are you wrong," I say. "I'm your friend, no matter if we date, or fight, or just ignore whatever this is, I'll always be here for you. So will Farkle. We all love you, Maya. I promise, if Riley really cares about you, she'll accept whatever you choose to do."

Maya looks down, a tear rolling gently down her cheek. I put my arm around her shoulder and her lips twitch a little. 

The halls are completely empty. All I can hear is Maya's soft, rhythmic breathing, and mine. She fiddles with the friendship ring Riley gave her for her birthday. I can tell she's really worried about her. They are best friends after all. 

She breaks the silence. "What do you think Riley will say?" she asks. 

"I don't know," I reply. I wish I could be more helpful. But really, what would she say? 

I hear sobbing. Maya whips her face around to meet mine. The tears aren't her's. Not mine, either. We stand up, slowly. The sobs continue. It sounds like 2 people. I instinctively reach out for Maya's hand. She slaps it away, and I smile. That's the Maya I know. 

The crying gets louder and louder. Now it sounds like 3 people. What? 

This time it's Maya who reaches for my hand. I take it. "Hello?" I say, my voice shaky. 

The crying stops. Three shadows emerge from around the corner.
